Carter, J. ; Muir, P.H.. Printing and the Mind of Man : A Descriptive Catalogue Illustrating the Impact of Print on the Evolution of Western Civilization During Five Centuries.. Cassell and Company Ltd., London, first edition, 1967, 1967.

Price: US$89.83 + shipping

Description: Cloth, folio, 32 cm, xxxiv, 280 pp, 124 ills. 424 entries. The superb catalogue is based on that prepared for a major exhibition held in 1963 to illustrate the "impact of print on the evolution of western civilization during five centuries". This is the first edition of the expanded post-exhibition version of the catalogue, much enlarged in order to provide an appropriate permanent record. Great care went into the choice of the "landmark books" described here, which aim to illustrate the appearance in print of "new concepts in philosophy, religion, and politics; in economics, jurisprudence, education, and sociology; new ideas in historiography and linguistics; in the arts and architecture; new discoveries in natural history, geography, the sciences, medicine, and technology." The extensive explanations of the importance and significance of each exhibit were then prepared by experts and reviewed to ensure their accuracy, and that the judgements expressed were appropriately balanced, and that the descriptions succeeded in instructing the general reader in plainly intelligible terms. From an advertisement for the book: " The descriptive formula is designed for the accurate identification of the entry, and no more: the editors have aimed at precision without pedantry. Bibliographical references are supplied where (but only where) necessary. The ample text provides background and perspective as well as analysis and exposition. Each entry has been written by a specialist; but each has been scrutinized and revised by the six members of the editorial board, and many also by outside experts, before reaching its final form. The book will thus appeal not only to scholars, students and librarians, book-collectors and booksellers, but to every general reader who is, or can be, interested in the history of ideas, and their impact not only on the development of western civilization but on his own thoughts and actions every day of his life." Booklabel of 'Lenkiewicz Foundation, ex-libris Robert Lenkiewicz' on front pastedown endpaper, a little spotting to fore-edges, otherwise Near Very Good, in a slightly yellowed and edgeworn dustwrapper.
