MILL, John Stuart.. Principles of Political Economy. With Some of their Applications to Social Philosophy.. London: John W. Parker, 1849, 1849.

Price: US$955.53 + shipping

Description: Second edition of Mill's principal work on economics, which he revised from the first of 1848 at Harriet Taylor's wishes and direction, marking a significant change in his approach to socialism. "From the moment of publication, Mill's Principles was hailed as a classic, far more congenial to the public than earlier economic textbooks, and far more readable than the Logic. Yet in Mill's eyes it was out of date almost before it appeared, because of the eruption in 1848 of the 'year of revolutions', which brought with it widespread experimentation in co-operative, socialist, and public works schemes in many parts of Europe. Mill later claimed that, if he and Harriet [Taylor] had anticipated the changes in public opinion that occurred in that year, they would have composed the Principles in much more ambitious and 'socialist' terms" (ODNB). The second edition was revised accordingly. Taylor "told Mill to abolish in the second edition, all his objections against Socialism and Communism. She demanded a complete reversal of his economic treatise in its most essential feature. And she obtained it, though the process cost him infinite pain and worry. The work which had set out to expose all schemes of communal ownership as wild fancies, came within a year to regard them as 'the most valuable elements of human improvements now existing'. His disavowal of Socialism so confidently expressed in 1848 was replaced in 1849 by the brief contradiction: 'On the Communistic scheme, supposing it to be successful, there would be an end to all anxiety concerning the means of subsistence: and this would be much gained for human happiness'" (St. John Packe, pp. 312-313). Goldsmiths' 36183.1; not in Einaudi. Michael St. John Packe, The Life of John Stuart Mill, 1954. 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, printed paper spine labels, frames to boards in blind, yellow endpapers, edges untrimmed. Contemporary ownership signature to front free endpapers of one James Showers. Spines a little sunned, some wear to labels, light rubbing. A very good copy.
