Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, early state of this classic work. BAL 3402. Johnson p. 39-41. Octavo, original publisher's green pictorial cloth decorated in gilt, with one hundred and ninety-two illustrations. In good condition. The Prince and the Pauper is a treasured historical satire, played out in two very different socioeconomic worlds of 16th-century England, centers around the lives of two boys born in London on the same day: Edward, Prince of Wales, and Tom Canty, a street beggar. During a chance encounter, the two realize they are identical and, as a lark, decide to exchange clothes and roles â€" a situation that briefly, but drastically, alters the lives of both youngsters. The Prince, dressed in rags, wanders about the city's boisterous neighborhoods among the lower classes and endures a series of hardships; poor Tom, now living with the royals, is constantly filled with the dread of being discovered for who and what he really is. Brimming with gentle humor and discerning social scrutiny, this timeless tale of transposed identities remains one of Twain's most popular and best-loved novels.

Description: First edition, first state of Twain's allegorical adventure of 16th-century England, aimed at elevating his literary reputation before HUCKLEBERRY FINN finally secured it. Playing on the theme of living a day of opposites (a tradition centuries old in holidays like Saturnalia), THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER uses the plot of switching roles in order to bring to light legal injustices based on inequity - but with a characteristically Twain touch of humor and adventure. Twain put up extra money to make it a lavish production, in part because his wife hoped this book would establish his critical reputation, "even if the elegance of it eats up the publisher's profits and mine too" (Twain to his sister, quoted in Powers). This is technically the first American edition, as Twain issued authorized editions in London and Montreal a few days in advance so as to counteract piracies. According to biographer Ron Powers, the book was so well received that some reviewers were, in fact, startled that Twain had written it. 8.25'' x 6.5''. Original green pictorial cloth elaborately stamped in gilt and black (rosette on spine 1/8 inch below fillet). Illustrated throughout with wood engravings. Franklin Press imprint on copyright page; "do not" on page 263; "reigned" on page 362. 411, [1] pages. Careful repairs to joints and hinges, title lettering on front board partially effaced, boards somewhat rubbed. Evidence of bookplate removal to flyleaf verso; a few marginal paper repairs.

These initial printings are prized for encapsulating the authentic essence of a novel's inception, presenting the text in a format untouched by subsequent revisions or alterations. This pursuit allows collectors to obtain the most genuine version of a novel, preserving the original nuances and quirks, even errors, by the author. For instance, first editions by literary figures such as Mark Twain, Bill Clinton, and J.K. Rowling often feature errors that were later corrected in subsequent printings, deviating from the unique characteristics of the initial impression.
