Description: Red cloth boards with gilt titles and black pictorial decoration. Boards somewhat darkened with some stains to front and rear. Top and bottom edges of spine are creased and with some very small tears. Some cracking to hinges but binding still firm. Some creasing and a couple of tears to prelim edges with mild signs of foxing otherwise contents are unmarked if a little yellowed.

An early U.K. edition, published the year after the first U.K. edition. No edition state to the title page, adverts are dated December 1883.Mark Twain's popular historical fiction novel, following the young Edward VI and his look-alike, Tom Canty.The novel concerns the ascension of the nine year old Edward and his friendship with the pauper Tom, who lives with his abusive alcoholic father.This novel was Twain's first attempt at historical fiction.Illustrated with two frontispiece, and many in-text illustrations throughout.Thirty-two pages of adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Tear to the front joint, smaller tear to the tail of the spine. Spine is a little discoloured. A few minor marks to the boards and spine. Light rubbing to the spine and extremities. Hinges are starting but firm. Bookseller's label to the front paste down. Internally, binding is a little strained in places. Pages are bright and generally clean with light spots and handling marks. With 32pp publisher's catalogue (dated January 1886) bound in at end. Lovely copy of the second UK edition published a year after the first. Most uncommon in anything like this condition.

Description: A tale for young people, by Samuel Clemmons, with 190 B/W plate and textblock illustrations, including a frontispiece facsimile letter from Hugh Latimer to Lord Cromwell, this well respected tome, repeatedly adapted for film and television, comes in Red Cloth binding, with Black pictorial illustration and Gilt titling, protected with mylar wrapping, pages are mostly clean bright and tight, save one inscription from a previous owner and less than a dozen fox marks.
