A scarce 1st American edition of the influential novel by Charles Dickens, which popularized serialized writing, cliffhanger endings, and a wide range of plays and other cultural impacts. Like many early Dickens works, this edition was pirated from the British version, due to weak copyright laws in the United States at the time. Includes an early bookseller sticker from J.B. Lippincott and Co., founded only 2 years prior in Philadelphia and would grow to one of the largest American publishers for decades in a row. COLL1838BFIW-0823-aj0413
