Description: No. 111 of a "first, limited edition" of one thousand copies. 6 ½ in. x 9 ¾ in. 188 pp. B/w illustrations by Alexander Couard. Light blue cloth over boards. Gilt titling on the spine and on the front panel. Rough edges. The spine and its titling sunning, as do the margins of both the front and rear panels. Some pages show offset from neighboring pictures. Some pages have wrinkles, no doubt a manufacturing flaw. But the book is still tightly bound and free of marks, underlining, etc.

Illustrated with full-page woodcuts and head and tail-pieces by Alexander Couard. This limited printing comprised the entire edition of Caldwell's second book; there was no trade edition. Published in 1930, Poor Fool was Erskine Caldwell's second novel. Like most of his fiction, it revolves around a gallery of grotesque characters motivated by the basest urges. The novel's central figure is Blondy Niles, a down-and-out boxer who exists at the very fringes of society. The garish nighttime world of bars and prostitutes, con men and petty crimes is the milieu in which he moves. When he is approached by Salty Banks to be an unwitting fall guy in a rigged boxing scheme, a calamitous chain of events is set in motion, and death is the inevitable result.
