Joyce, James. Poems Penyeach. Shakespeare & Company, Paris, 1927.

Price: US$549.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A first edition of a series of 13 poems written between 1904 and 1924 and published by Shakespeare and Co. in 1927. The 1932 Obelisk Press edition of Pomes Penyeach came at a crucial juncture in James Joyce’s writing career and in the life and mental health of his daughter, Lucia. Joyce approached Jack Kahane, a founder of Obelisk Press who had previously produced a limited edition of Joyce’s Haveth Childers Everywhere, and the two agreed to terms. With Desmond Harmsworth, Obelisk Press agreed to print a version of Pomes Penyeach that would use Lucia’s drawings and stress the handcrafted, artisanal nature of the book. Twenty-five copies were printed in the summer of 1932. In the hopes of instilling in Lucia a sense of worth and independence, Joyce convinced Kahane to give Lucia 33% of the net profits. Covers darkened, spine with transparent tape preservation. First edition with errata slip present. 3¾" - 4¾".

Joyce, James. Pomes Penyeach. Shakespeare and Company,, 1927.

Price: US$716.57 + shipping

Description: Paris, Shakespeare and Company, 1927, Prima edizione. Prima edizione. Più che buon esemplare. Description: JOYCE, James. Pomes Penyeach. Paris, Shakespeare and Company, 1927. First edition, with errata slip, of this collection of thirteen short poems written by Joyce between 1904 and 1924. The title is a play on ‘poems’ and the French ‘pommes’. However, as printed on the rear cover, the book’s original prince was one shilling (twelve pennies), making the thirteenth poem a bonus. The collection includes some of Joyce’s most popular poems, such as ‘A Flower Given to My Daughter’ and ‘On the Beach at Fontana’, with each poem accompanied by its place and year of composition. Sextodecimo; some very light foxing, but generally very good; original paper covered boards, covers lettered in green (covers sunned and slightly soiled, spine a little worn with some small loss).
