Crimson morocco over bevelled boards, with onlaid diamond-shaped centrepiece in green morocco with gilt lettering and black and gilt decor to both boards. Elaborate geometric decor to boards in black, gilt, and royal blue. Raised bands, black, gilt, and blue decor, and green gilt label to spine. Ornate gilt decor to turn-ins. Some darkening to spine and near board edges, and mild rubbing to spine and board edges, and rear board. All edges gilt. Decorative headbands. Blue silk ribbon, worn. Marbled endpapers, front endpaper mildly cracked at gutter, rear endpaper uncracked. Small leather gilt label to inside front board: 'sold by John Field 65 Regent St. London'. Inscription dated 1863 to blank front endpage. Portrait frontis with tissue guard. Profusely illustrated with over 100 in-text illus. engraved by the Brothers Dalziel after John Gilbert (1817-1897), the 'incredibly fertile' illustrator 'whose naturalistic, sketchy, and spirited designs captured both the elevated realm of poetry and the everyday world of the popular press' (ODNB). A remarkable heavy mid-Victorian full crushed morocco by David Bryce of Glasgow with twin raised bands, fine gilt panels and stunning gilt tooling to the boards with a panel in relief. Gilt dentelles and superb gauffered gilt edges. With an neat small inscription dated 1864 to 'Georgie Waddell from her cousin C.M. Fenton Livingstone'. Illustrated with over 100 designs by John Gilbert, engraved by the brothers Dalziel. Some rubbing but in fine condition.
