Shelley, P.B. ; Forman, H.B.. The poetical works of Percy Bysshe Shelley, edited with a memoir by H. Buxton Forman. [ 5 vols, complete set, presentation copy ]. George Bell & Sons, London, first edition thus, 1892, 1892.

Description: 5 vols, original two-tone red cloth, 8vo, various paginations. Now more remembered for his forgeries with Thomas James Wise, Harry Buxton Forman was a highly regarded editor of Shelley and Keats. This 5-volume Aldine Edition of Shelley's poetical works is based upon Forman's great 8-volume edition of the complete works (1876-1880), which became the standard one for the next fifty years. As the editor of the Oxford Standard Authors edition observed in 1904: "For the first time Shelley’s text was edited with scientific exactness of method, and with a due regard for the authority of the original editions. It would be difficult indeed to over-estimate the gains which have accrued to lovers of Shelley from the strenuous labours of Mr. Harry Buxton Forman C.B . his untiring industry in research, his wide bibliographical knowledge and experience, above all his accuracy as invariable as it is minute have combined to make him, in the words of Professor Dowden, 'our chief living authority on all that relates to Shelley’s writings'." Contents: 1. Memoir. Queen Mab. Alastor : and other poems -- 2. Laon and Cynthia. Rosalind and Helen : with other poems -- 3. The Cenci. Prometheus unbound : with other poems. O?e?dipus Tyrannus. Epipsychidion -- 4. Adonais. Hellas. The death of Napoleon. Principal posthumous poems, 1817-1822. Miscellaneous posthumous poems, 1814-1815 -- 5. Miscellaneous posthumous poems, 1819-1822. Translations. Juvenilia. Index of first lines. General index. Inscribed in volume I by Forman to William Whiteway Wilkinson 'from his old friemd H Buxton Forman, October 1895' and laid in is an original photograph of Forman's younger son, Maurice Buxton Forman (taken when he was quite elderly). Spines faded, one or two corners bumped, top edges duststained, two volumes with a pinhead hole to the front joint, endpapers somewhat browned or spotted, otherwise a Good set, most volumes unopened.
