Description: 1st, Limited and Numbered Edition 402 of 1050 to final leaf, Nonesuch 1926. 4to. xx 213pp. Steel engraved vignette portrait to title page. Printed on thick creamy Dutch Rag paper with wide margins in Bodoni Type. Internally very good clean tight sound square, attractive scrolled armorial bookplate of John Richard Sofio to pastedown, with ownership inscription of J. Stuart Williams upon, browning limited to free endpapers not intruding or detracting, edges of leaves attractively untrimmed. Bound in original full wide weave brown cloth, with bright gilt text on red calf leather label. Abraham Cowley was a leading poet of the 17th century, indeed Milton held that Cowley, Spenser and Shakespeare were the three best English poets. Nonesuch Press, publishers of the volume in hand, were unusual amongst private press, in that it used a small Albion Hand Press to exquisitely design and produce books which were then commercially printed, since the owner Francis Meynell wanted to demonstrate that Mechanical means could be made to serve fine ends.

Poems: FFEP, [4], tp, Limited Edition page which reads in part: "This edition printed and made in England, consists of 1450 copies in two volumes on Van Gelder Rag Paper for sale in England and America and 90 copies (the two volumes bound together on Oxford India Paper." An additional label has been placed over "This is Number" which reads: "This copy is one of fifty in the gift of Adrian Van Sinderen whose kindness in allowing the reproduction of twelve pictures is hereby acknowledged by the Nonesuch Press." Thus, no number has been assigned; followed by the list of Poems [2], 283pp. Paradise: FFEP, [6], tp, Limited Edition page, List of Twelve Books of Paradise Lost, Notice from the Printer, 359pps, [2]. Very good books in dark red pebbled leather covered boards. Gilt-stamped lettering and graphics on spines. Many unopened pages in both volumes. Deckle edges on the fore-edge and lower edges. Spine and extremities are sunned. Edges at heads and tails of board spines are rubbed; corners at tail of Poems have 1/4" open tears and a small chip on the back corner; tail of Paradise is split and with small chip on the front corner. All fore-edge corners and adjacent edges of Poems are rubbed through; lower front fore-edge corner of Paradise is bumped and rubbed through; very small rub-throughs on the other three fore-edge corner tips of Paradise. All external edges are age- and soil-darkened. Upper corners of both FFEP have a 3/4" round white label attached. The end-papers at the front and back of both volumes are more age-toned than the others, text pages have minimal age-toning to outermost edges. In Paradise, pps. 285-286 and 293-305 have a dark stain of various degrees on the lower fore-edge corners, else both are very clean internally and with no foxing. Text blocks are very sound. There is some discoloration to the vellum spines with some blemishes, some light edge-wear to the boards but they remain attractive and square. No markings or inscriptions, small prvious owner label on the inside bottom corner of each (Jack Pritchard, Isokon). Rough cut page edges browned. Hinges tight and square, no spotting or foxing. Illustrations by William Blake. A very nice set.
