(xvi) + 415pp. Five raised bands to spine; all edges gilt; marbled endpapers; frontispiece portrait, plus other monochrome plates; exceptionally clear and legible typeface, with decorative capitals; with notes to the poems, and notes to the letters. Minor scuffs and scratches to cover, though spine appears almost as new; gilt edges also exceptionally clean and bright; internal contents very largely clean, though there are a few odd spots of foxing in first part of volume; binding sound throughout. Name clipped from half-title. Presentation page for a school prize at Eton with names Cecilio Aylmer Porter and Jacobus J. Hornsby, 1881. Minor foxing. Contains the famous Elegy written in a Country Church-yard as well as the disturbing Ode on the Death of a Favourite Cat. Riviere was a London bookbinder of Huguenot descent who headed the leading bookbinding firm of his day, commissioned by Queen Victoria as well as leading bibliophiles.

Description: A large paper, illustrated edition, of Thomas Gray's poems and letters. In a lovely full calf binding. With a comprehensive biography of Gray. With a frontispiece and three mounted plates of photographs. The three plates are of landscape and architectural views. Collated, complete. Being a collection of Gray's Odes, Songs, Extracts and letters. With his 'Ode on the Spring', 'Ode on the Death of a Favourite Cat, 'The Progress of Poetry' and his famed 'Elegy written in a Country Church-yard'. With an Eton prize presentation leaf to the front of the work, dated 1884. Thomas Gray as a famed classical scholar and professor at Pembroke College, Cambridge. His best known work is 'Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard' which was first published in 1751. Gray only had 13 poems published during his lifetime due to his self-critical nature. The letters to this work are between Gray and Walpole, Gray's mother, Mr West, Mr Wharton and his father. A lovely work, with several decorative head pieces and ornamental letters. In a full calf binding. Imperceptibly rebacked with the original spine laid down and boards preserved. Externally, very smart with several marks to boards. Rubbing to the head of rear board. Shelfwear to the spine has resulted in the gilt fading. Gift inscriptions to the recto of front endpaper, Francisco Harold Hoskier. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots to the first and last few pages in addition to the plates. Crease to the plate at page 11. Otherwise, just the odd spots. Very Good

Rose, with the patron of the arts and prominent attorney's bookplate on the front pastedown. Rose (1904-2002), a onetime law partner of Richard Nixon and John N. Mitchell in the firm Nixon Mudge Rose Alexander & Mitchell, was instrumental in bringing Nixon into the firm in 1963 after he had lost the election for governor of California. Rose s collection of art was donated to the Cleveland Art Institute and to the Williams College Art Museum, which has a room bearing his name. A significant work with a most distinguished provenance.

Description: [xvi],415p,[1] 4 plates with pasted photos. Contemporary full calf, richly gilt spine with raised bands and red label, boards with gilt frames, all edges gilt, hinges a little rubbed. A signed binding by Riviere & Sons with their stamp on the inside lower edge of the front marbled end paper. An Eton prize volume to Henric Clinton Baker 1881, with an inserted presentation leaf bound in, and with the armorial book plate of William Clinton-Baker, Bayfordsbury, Herts. Third Chiswick Press edition printed by Whittingham and Wilkins, earlier published in 1863 and in 1867. They were used as premiums at Eton College and all editions has the four mounted photographs, one portrait and three views of Eton. The Clinton-Bakers at the Bayfordsbury Estate were famous for their gardening and their Pinetum. Henry William Clinton-Baker (1865-1935) was the last owner and he is also author to ?Illustrations of Conifers? in four volumes. The garden is now owned by the University of Hertfordshire.
