Description: Two volumes. vii,[1],3-233,[1]; vii,[1],231,[1]pp. Small octavo. Hardcover, bound in contemporary full red morocco with gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g., by Peters & Gould Binders, Boston with their ticket. A well preserved set with discoloration to the endpapers, prior owner’s name on the fly leaf, and a dark few dark spots along the spines. The first American edition of Tennyson's most substantial collective edition of his work to the date, with significant new material appearing for the first time, as well as revisions to poems published in 1832. In addition, this was the first book by a foreign author published in the US in which the author was compensated by the publisher, representing an important milestone in the history of copyright protection. The binding itself is a scarce example from the period of a English style binding produced on American soil.
