[TENNYSON, Alfred]. Poems MDCCCXXX-MDCCCXXXIII. [Toronto]: Privately published, 1862.

Price: US$63.60 + shipping

Description: Small square 8vo. viii, 112 pp. Unopened in original blue paper wrappers, printed to the upper cover. A remarkably well preserved copy. A pirated edition compiled by James Dykes Campbell, who later in life issued a highly regarded biography of Coleridge. Putting together a selection of early poems that Tennyson had chosen to suppress from authorised editions of his works, Campbell had this edition privately published in Toronto during a professional posting to Canada. It is thought that about 50 copies soon made it over to London and into the hands of the publisher John Camden Hotten, who set about marketing it. Tennyson quickly became aware of the edition and started litigation to prevent its sale, Hotten subsequently settling out of court - paying £100 in damages and surrendering his remaining stock of the book. Wise, Part III, I.

Description: Small square 8vo, viii,112pp., one of 150 copies privately printed, bookplates, orig. blue printed wrappers, unopened, uncut. Ashley IX, p.148. Carter & Pollard, Enquiry, p.120. Wise's account remains the fullest we have: 'The text of the interesting little volume is composed of the suppressed poems of Tennyson, taken from the Poems, Chiefly Lyrical of 1830, and the Poems of 1833. It was compiled by James Dykes Campbell, who from April 1860 to the summer of 1862 resided in Canada as the representative of Messrs. Cochrane & Co., of Glasgow. During his stay in Toronto, Campbell caused the book to be privately printed in Toronto at his own cost. The work was done at the printing-house of Messrs. W.C. Chewitt & Co., of that City. About fifty copies, Campbell told me, were brought by him to London. Some of these came into the possession of John Camden Hotten. His attempt to circulate them ended in legal proceedings, and on July 31st, 1862, an injunction was granted restraining Hotten from selling any copies of the book, and from circulating the catalogue in which it was advertised.' A note in Edmund Gosse's library catalogue, 1893, states that about 150 copies were printed.

This piracy was compiled and edited by Coleridge's biographer James Dykes Campbell and was printed in Toronto. The work was sold in London by John Camden Hotten, who apparently received about 50 copies from Canada. Hoten's plans were thwarted, however, when Tennyson obtained an injunction prohibiting the issue of the book.

According to Thomas Wise, this was compiled and edited by James Dykes Campbell, a Scottish merchant, writer, and Coleridge biographer. A pirated edition of early poems by Tennyson which the Poet Laureate had suppressed or revised in later editions of his work. The London bookseller John Camden Hotten advertised it as "the choice poems that have been dropped or thrown aside by the Poet during his literary career."
