Description: Sir William Watson (1858 1935), was an English poet, popular for the political content of his verse.He was very much on the traditionalist wing of English poetry. He was a prolific poet of the 1890s, and a contributor to The Yellow Book, a leading journal of the British 1890s; associated with Aestheticism and Decadence, On Tennyson's death, Watson was a strong candidate for Poet Laureate but his earlier opposition to the Boer War had made him politically unsuitable and he was passed over for Alfred Austin. This is an edition of 100, printed on handmade deckle edged paper. Light wear to the edges, the spine lable is chipped at the edges, the pages somewhat wavy, probably due to the nature of the paper. A very nice example of this lovely Victorian book presenting Tennyson's poems, accompanied by more than 50 wonderful woodcut illustrations after works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, J. E. Millais, W. H. Hunt, and other Pre-Raphaelites. The first edition of this book was published by E. Moxon in 1857. Simon Cooke's book 'The Moxon Tennyson: A Landmark in Victorian Illustration' (2021) asserts the Moxon edition was extremely influential, changing book design in fundamental ways. Some suggest it dramatically redefined the relationship between images and words in print, introducing the "golden age" of British woodcut illustrations. Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892) succeeded William Wordsworth as Poet Laureate in 1850 and is regarded as the chief representative of poetry in the Victorian age. The selection of Tennyson's poetry for this creative excursion into book illustration seems most appropritate. As Cooke points out: "Tennyson is often described, in the words of William Allingham, as a "painter's poet" or "painter in words" who deploys an intensely visual technique embodying color, light, materialized details, expressive space, figures arranged or "composed, " and a strong emphasis on the dynamics of looking. Though he uses incantatory devices, he was more interested in showing than telling, structuring his verse as a dense montage of pictorial tableaux made up of dramatic situations in the manner of genre paintings, landscapes, and intricate scenes drawn from history. John Byrne Leicester Warren, 3rd Baron de Tabley (1835-95), English poet, numismatist, botanist and an authority on bookplates (notably reflected in his 1880 work A Guide to the Study of Book Plates). He was a close personal friend of Alfred Lord Tennyson, who noted of Lord de Tabley 'He is Faunus, he is a woodland creature'. The fine etchings present comprise five by the renowned artist, publisher & typographer Charles Ricketts (1866-1931) and one bookplate design created as a gift for the author by the Scottish artist & printmaker William Bell Scott (1811-90). The attractive vellum binding features a repeating rose-petal motif in gilt, suggestive of 'gilt rose petals parachuting to earth in a windless sky' (The Early Nineties, James Nelson).
