Masefield first found his love for writing and storytelling aboard the HMS Conway from 1888-1891. He became known for his poems and was also a talented public speaker. Masefield was appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom in 1930 and maintained that title until his passing in 1967. To this day, his long-running title as Poet Laureate is bested only by that of Alfred Tennyson. Excerpt from the front panel of the dust wrapper: "'It was a wild afternoon in the South Pacific in the late summer of 1922. The full-rigged ship, The Hurrying Angel, was running uneasily, under reduced canvas, homeward bound with grain from Melbourne. Away astern and on her starboard quarter, the sky was dirty and dark, livid above the darkness, and plumy above the glare, with angry, whitish manes and smudges swiftly changing. The wind was freshening with squalls of rain; the sea was rising; in the air there was a quality of menace.' . Mr. Masefield's picture of the storm is indescribably vivid--the screaming of the gale, the sea rising with a snap and a snarl, the lightning ripping through the blanket of the dark; the decks awash, half the wheel gone, the fore and main masts crashing down. . The story is based on a real happening. It makes as exciting a story as Masefield has ever told; a story of resourcefulness, skill and invincible courage under great hardship."
