Doheny, wife of the oil baron played by Daniel Day Lewis in "There Will Be Blood," amassed a valuable collection that was dispersed in auctions after she died in 1988. Doheny acquired the book from Frederick W. Skiff, another voracious collector, based in Portland, Ore. His bookplate, an elaborate sporting pictorial, is on the front pastedown (see below). This plate was designed by W.F. Hopson and is a small gem of American graphic art. Frank Weitenkampf, in "American Graphic Art," called Hopson's bookplates "that combination of variety in treatment with dignity and restraint in expression which produces the happiest results in these marks of bibliophilic proprietorship" (p. 261, Macmillan 1924 revised edition). Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Third issue of the 1st Edition with spine fading and wear to the top of the spine, scattered bits of staining and offsetting from several inserted newspaper clippings, but a fascinating copy none-the-less because of two bookplates of I.W.Lees and and his inscription to his daughter and her signature and the date "Jan 17th, 1871" .Isaiah W. Lees was an Englishman who first came to San Francisco in 1848, was hired as a policeman in 1854 and rose to be Chief Of Police. Harte arrived in 1853 and after an unsuccessful effort at gold mining worked briefly as a stagecoach guard for Wells Fargo. Although there is no evidence the two crossed paths it is an interesting association between two early Gold Rush personalities who went on to fame and fortune in their respective fields. AND I can fine no other example of his signature.

Description: HARTE, BRET. Poems, Boston: Fields, Osgood & Co., 1871.12mo, first edition (first printing with "S.T.K." typo on p. 136), pp. vi, 7-152, green cloth boards with beveled edges and gilt lettering and F&O colophon on spine, gilt Harte signature on front, label on free front endpaper identifying this as part of the Estelle Doheny Collection of American Literature. The bookplate is in its first state, with "West Haven" (Conn.) given as Skiff's residence, rather than the later "Portland." The Harte book is BAL 7253.Condition of this book:Near fine, bright, with some rubbing at the upper spine. Size: 12mo. [CHINESE-AMERICANS]. HARTE, Bret.. The heathen Chinee." With illustrations by S.[ol] Eytinge, Jr.. James R. Osgood & Co., Late Ticknor & Fields, and Fields, Osgood & Co.,, Boston:, 1871.

Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Description: 12mo. [2], 17, [3] pp., plus 2 pp. publisher's ads. Frontisp. woodcut engraving, 7 woodcut engraved plates. Salmon-coloured illustrated printed softcovers, woodcut engraved illust. front cover (minor soiling, spotting on front cover, very minor chipping foot of spine, edgewear), still VG- copy. First illustrated edition of Harte's satirical poem, Plain Language from Truthful James (1870), which became the hallmark of the Chinese Exclusion movement, and offered key vocabulary for the anti-Chinese sentiments which continued to grow through the end of the 19th century. Harte composed the poem primarily looking to offer a colourful anecdote of life in the West, draw poker and the Chinese immigrants building the railroads, mining, and running laundries and businesses in California mining camps, intended primarily as a playful commentary on a familiar California scene. After its' publication in the Overland Monthly, it received wide attention in the East, which used Harte's poem as a means by which to fan waves of violent prejudice and hostility towards Chinese and other Asian immigrants. American author and poet Bret Harte is best remembered for his short fiction featuring miners, gamblers, and other romantic figures of the California Gold Rush. In a career spanning more than four decades, he wrote poetry, fiction, plays, lectures, book reviews, editorials, and magazine sketches in addition to fiction. As he moved from California to the eastern U.S. to Europe, he incorporated new subjects and characters into his stories, but his Gold Rush tales have been most often reprinted, adapted, and admired.
