Description: Leather binding with all page edges gilt, marbled end papers and paste-downs with gold tooling around the edges, former owner's signature at the top of the title page, this is the first printing of the second edition of this book with the first having been first printed in 1821 (Cambridge,Mass.), 240 pages with very light foxing to the borders of some pages, this is a first edition thus with some new poetry not having appeared in book form, the spine is darkened and somewhat crackled although the tooled and front rear covers are very smooth and supple to the touch, otherwise book is clean, complete, and tight.

Attractive contemporary full black polished calf, gilt back in five compartments, gilt lettered in the second, gilt foliated corner ornaments linked by double gilt arches, blind triple roll tooled frames on both sides with gilt foliated scroll corners, inner gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. BAL 1603. Attractive full binding near fine with very light wear corner slightly bumped, very occasional bit of foxing, sheets clean unmarked, complete. H9226.

Attached to the rear is a letter signed by Bryant sent to George Harvey dated September 29 1871. Folded half-sheet with a bit of toning around the edges but no tears. Housed in green slipcase.
