Description: Hardcover in Very Good condition, 4to, pages: xxxvi,168; Polished leather with repaired spine and hinges, gilt border and coat of arms on front, spine in six chambers w/gilt lettering and decoration, all edges gilt, marbled end-papers, engraved frontis by Freebairn and two plates by Charles W. Radclyffe engraved by E. Radclyffe tipped in; Spine repaired with Japanese paper, hinges reinforced, tips bumped and worn, book plate of Sir George R. Clark on front paste-down. Apparently this volume of Clark's was presented to Edmund Ware, Instructor, at his retirement from Eton in 1892 (see presentation page). Bookseller accession no.:13837. Raised bands with gilt trim and florets to spine. Gilt lettering and all page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Some rubbing and darkening to edges and spine. Small rubbed patch to boards nr bottom corner. A couple of small scratches and handling marks to boards. Armorial bookplate to front endpaper. Binders stamp ?Riviere? to blank corner. Some light foxing to plain endpapers/prelims. Some small spots to title page and frontis plate, a couple of occasional minor spots to pages else inside pages very clean and tight throughout. Latin presentation inscription to front (translation) ?This Book, Johanni Walter, Eton retirement gift to the teacher instructor Edmundas Warre, 1892.? An Eton Colle edition bound in a full calf prize binding signed Riviere & Son, awarded to Ludovico Christopher Loyd in 1894. Featuring a frontispiece portrait of the author as well as decorative initials, head and tail pieces, and three further full page plates of engravings of charming landscapes. Collated, complete.Containing Gray's original poems as well as translations into English and Latin verse of the works of Petrarca, from the Anthologia Græca, and others. In full calf Eton College prize binding, with five raised bands and gilt tooling to the spine, Eton College lion crest to the front and rear boards, gilt to the edges. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, minor rubbing to the spine and extremities of the boards. School Prize inscription to the Eton prize sheet bound in with the volume, dated 1894. Description: This is an Eton College Gift Binding (Gray attended Eton in 1725)Contents include Memoir, Lecture, and miscellaneous poems such as Ode on the Spring, Ode on the Death of a Favorite Cat, drowned in a Tub of Gold Fishes, Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College, Hymn to Adversity, The Fatal Sisiers, an Ode, The Descent of Odin, an Ode, Epitaph on Sir William Williams, Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard, and other various pieces and Translations into English Verse, Poemata, Translations into Latin Verse, etc., The Honorable Horace Walpole contributed a four-page biography of the author, included is A Lecture Delivered Before the Eton Literary Society, Oct. 16, 1886 (36 pages). Beautifully executed black and white engravings by Charles and E. Radclyffe. 169 pages, there is some scattered foxing (light browning) on about 20 various pages including the title page with facing vignette otherwise a beautifully bound book. THIS BOOK HAS BEEN BOUND BY RIVIERE & SON (signed binding on front-endpaper), marbled endpapers, wonderful gold tooling oncovers with gold stamped coat of arms on both covers (lion with eight cross/cross-like symbols., there is also a presentation page in the front in which the handwriting is difficult to read. As best as I can transcribe it reads thus: (In print) Hunc Librum, (Handwritten) Radalpho Eric Noyds Brocklebauk, (In print) Etona Discedenti Dono Dedit, (Handwritten) Edmondus Warre, (In print) Magister Informator Etonae A. S. MDCCC. LXXXIX. (1889 date with the 89 portion LXXXIX written by hand). All page edges gilt (gold) Edmond Warre was the Headmaster who latter became the Provost.

Gray came to be known as one of the "Graveyard poets" of the late 18th century, along with Oliver Goldsmith, William Cowper, and Christopher Smart. Boards with gilt decorative banded border and gilt crest with lion and cross on both covers. Boards lightly scratched, worn, few small nicks. Edges lightly worn. Corners worn and bumped. Nice copy.
