Description: Two vols, 12mo, (viii), 300; (vi), 299 pp., names of the contributors added in a later hand, some light foxing, contemporary calf, spines gilt, spines rubbed and a trifle worn at ends, upper joint of vol. I attached, but loose. First edition. A major collection of original new verse, edited by Southey, and with contributions from most of his early circle of friends. Prominent among these is Coleridge, who provided no fewer than twenty-seven poems. Other contributors, aside from Southey himself, include Joseph Cottle, Humphry Davy, Thomas Beddoes, George Dyer, Charles Lamb, Charles Lloyd, Robert Lovell, Amelia Opie, Mary Robinson, and Francis Wrangham. Description: First Editions. [vi], 300; [v], 299 pp. Full calf with gilt borders to boards; red and green leather title labels, raised bands and gilt lettering and devices to spines. Red speckled edges; dentelles to outer edges of boards. Small patches of abrasion to boards; joints and extremities slightly rubbed and some minor wear to corners. Light spotting to prelims and the very occasional mark inside, otherwise internally clean. Bookplate of Edmund Ferrers to both volumes. Previous owner's name, 'Isabelle Harries', in ink at title. P. 31/32 of vol. 1 were cancelled as they contained a war poem by Southey which was deemed unpatriotic. With contributions from S.T. Coleridge, Charles Lamb, Charles Lloyd, Amelia Opie. 17 cms tall. Description: Two volumes (4" x 6-1/2") bound in recent half brown morocco with matching corners retaining the original marbled boards, all edges marbled. Leaf B8 (pages 31-32) lacking in first volume, as usual; C3 in second volume in uncancelled state, with word "wicked" present on page 37, line 9. [Tinker 1953; Wise, Coleridge, 15]. Contributions by Samuel T. Coleridge (27 poems, some previously unpublished), Poet Laureate Robert Southey, Charles Lamb, Robert Lovell, Humphry Davy, Amelia Opie, and others. Pages 31-32 contained Southey's "War Poem," but were canceled in all but two known copies as the poem was considered unpatriotic. A third volume was advertised but never published. A remarkable and important collection of early Romantic poetry, here in unusually nice condition.
