Ward, Lynd; Voltaire [Francois Marie Arouet de Voltaire]; Hecht, Anthony; Wilson, Arthur. POEM UPON THE LISBON DISASTER. Penmæn Press, Lincoln MA, 1977.

Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Description: Signed limited first Lynd Ward-illustrated edition of Voltaire's poem on the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, presented in side-by-side French and English with striking woodcuts by Ward. The tragedy of the Lisbon earthquake, with tens of thousands of people killed, deeply affected Voltaire. A little over a month after the disaster, Voltaire sent this grim poem to a friend in Paris, marking his break with philosophical optimism (a philosophy he would later parody in CANDIDE). Lynd Ward's dark, heavy woodcuts capture the tone of the poem. An attractive edition. 11'' x 7''. Original black cloth-backed marbled boards. Ornamental woodcut to title page with five woodcuts throughout. 36 pages, bound fukurotoji style. Colophon signed by Ward, Hecht, and Wilson, numbered 88. In original black cloth slipcase. Slipcase with mild rubbing. Book sharp and clean.
