The tragedy of the Lisbon earthquake, with tens of thousands of people killed, deeply affected Voltaire. A little over a month after the disaster, Voltaire sent this grim poem to a friend in Paris, marking his break with philosophical optimism (a philosophy he would later parody in CANDIDE).
