Description: The sought after Johnson-Steevens edition of the collected plays of Shakespeare, a nice set complete with illustrations, including folding plates. Complete in fifteen volumes. The fourth edition of this set.A sought after edition of the plays of Shakespeare, edited with extensive commentary by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens.Volume I is illustrated with three plates.Volume II is illustrated with four folding tables.Volume VIII is illustrated with one folding plate of Morris Dancers.Collated, complete. In 1765, Johnson and Steevens produced the first notable scholarly analysis of Shakespeare, and were pivotal in elevating the Bard's reputation to the heights it has occupied since. This work was a milestone in Shakespearean scholarship and still very highly regarded.Johnson held a lifelong fascination with Shakespeare, the bard being the most quoted author in his 'Dictionary of the English Language'. However, Johnson had only a slight hand in this work, the bulk falling to noted Shakespearean commentator George Steevens. This 1793 edition is considered to be the best, being revised and expanded by Steevens, and was the last edition to involve him directly.Armorial bookplate to the front paste downs. In a full straight grain morocco binding. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the extremities. Spines are a little faded with light surface cracks. A little light rubbing to the spines, joints, and extremities, resulting in a small amount of loss of leather to the joints of the first three volumes. Some light marks to the boards. Mark to the head of the front board of Volume III. Small puncture mark to the tail of the rear board of Volume IX, two to the rear board of Volume XV. Rear hinge of Volume I is tightly bound. To which are added, Notes by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. The Fourth Edition.by the Editor of Dodsley's Collection of Old Plays.. London For T. Longman et al, 1793.

Price: US$4235.00 + shipping

Description: 15 volumes, 8vo., EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with about 145 engraved plates by S. and E. Harding, Millton Park stamp to each volume, occasional browning and off-setting, mostly to margins and verso of plates, near-contemporary straight-grained light brown morocco, all edges gilt, a little rubbed and bumped at extremities, otherwise a very good and readable set. While still containing various Prefaces, Essays and Criticisms, in short all the requisite scholastic Gravitas that one would wish for in a serious edition, this one has the added interest and allure of the engraved plates and a 'Historical Account of the English Stage' that not only gives a history of its development but features some of the actors of the time such as Richard Burbadge, described as; 'the most celebrated tragedian of our author's time.' There are also chapters on the learning of Shakespeare's writing, as well as commendatory verses or poems on Shakespeare by various poets. Aesthetically pleasing in every respect, in near-contemporary bindings. Shakespeare's works have also found themselves to be the subject of abridging, censoring and banning. the most famous example is the 'bowdlerisation' of the bards plays. Thomas Bowdler, an English physician created a "family friendly" version of Shakespeare's works. 'Family Shakespeare' was published in 1818. Bowdler's editing had cut 90% out of the stories and made a mockery of some of the greatest prose in the English language. Also banned In 1966 under Mao Tse-Tung's 'Cultural Revolution'.
