Condition: Very Good

Description: Six thick imperial 4to volumes in brown polished calf over boards, decorated with gilt-tooled floral borders and central blind-stamped panel with corner fleurons. Each volume professionally, neatly and uniformly rebacked; five flat raised bands with gilt decoration, gilt titling in two compartments and ornaments in the other four. Gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. The set includes the 36 plays that were published in the First Folio, plus Pericles. Illustrated with all 11 full-page engravings and 11 vignettes called for in the Contents. Of the 22 plates, 16 are by Thomas Stothard, 4 by William Hamilton, and 2 by Henry Fuseli; all engraved by James Heath. Bindings remain firm and tight. Cover edges lightly rubbed, more so at the corners; scattered small abrasions or wear, and light scratches. Text pages generally clean and fresh (except for five leaves in vol. 1 that show faint damp stains), with only widely scattered bits of spotting. Most of the engraved plates and vignettes show damp stains (most just a small corner area, a few that are larger) and light spotting, with some offsetting to facing page; small corner chip to one engraving. The damp appears to have been introduced to the plates prior to binding since the adjacent text pages don’t show damp stains or tidelines. Still, a handsome set overall.
