In 1819, Andrew and his brother Robert took over the running of the printing business of their uncle Andrew Strahan, the official King’s Printer. They brought in steam-powered printing presses. The King's Printer (known as the Queen's Printer during the reign of a female monarch) is typically a bureau of the national, state, or provincial government responsible for producing official documents issued by the King-in-Council, Ministers of the Crown, or other departments. Andrew Spottiswoode (19 February 1787 – 20 February 1866) was a Scottish printer, publisher and politician, MP for Saltash from 1826 to 1830, and Colchester from 1830 to 1831. In 1830, they were granted a renewed 30-year patent as King's Printer. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: All 8 volumes are strongly bound with square spines, very firm hinges and joints and tight pages. 97%+ of the gilding is intact and the boards are colorful. Light rubbing to spines, board edges and corners (multiple corners are lightly bumped), rubbing and light scratches to front and rear covers commensurate with 200-years-of-age. Each volume has a lovely mid-century bookplate attached to the front pastedown and an antique owner signature on the FFEP. There is the highly infrequent page corner crease or area of wear or mark. There is sporadic foxing particularly on and near the plates. Heavier foxing on the front and rear flyleafs and first few and last few pages of text. The vast majority of the leaves are clean with sharp text and bright pages and minimal wear. The page edges are impressively clean. The exception being the fore-edge on Vol. 6 has an ink stain. There is the usual unavoidable engraving shadowing to first few pages preceding and following each plate, despite being tissue-guarded. More pictures available upon request. The volumes will ship fully insured with signature required upon receipt for your protection. This set is from my personal collection and is exceptionally beautiful!
