Description: First editions thus. Full tooled original leather, two-color labels on spines, all edges tooled in gilt, original marbled endpapers. Moderate wear to covers, but considering the age of this set, it is the best we have ever seen. Occasional individual copies show up, and sometimes full sets, but they are usually well worn, with the cover detached or missing completely. It is a fragile set and this one is really nice with all covers intact, slight wear and flaking to gilt on spines, but it has survived many years intact and undisturbed. All 37 plates are intact, with one being an engraving of the bard himself, in volume one. There is also a plate done by William Blake in volume 6, page 357. Most of the tissue guards are still present. There is also an illustration of a stage in volume 1. The more elegant 10 volume set, on larger paper, has survived much better, and though more expensive, it is ultimately much more available. Each volume has a simple contemporary ownership label, stating its owner as "Lady Amcotts." Each volume also has a clear acetate cover to protect it from any further wear. It seems hard to imagine that many sets have survived a well as this one. -

Description: Nine volumes. Octavo. Handsomely bound in contemporary full diced russia with gilt tooling and titles to the spine and rolled gilt rules to the boards and turn-ins. All edges marbled. Each volume with a silk page marker. Illustrated with 37 engraved plates after original designs by Henry Fuseli, including two engraved by William Blake (Romeo and Juliet, Henry VIII). A very good set indeed, the bindings square and firm with minor rubbing and wear to the joints, a little bumping to the corners and a dent to the head of the upper board of volume IV. The contents with a discrete ninenteenth-century French ink ownership stamp for "A.A. Beaujour, Rots" to each title page and the very occasional dot of foxing are otherwise clean and bright throughout. A splendid set. A most attractive edition of Shakespeare's works, with a wonderful suite of illustrations by the Romantic artist Henry Fuseli, including two engraved by William Blake. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Description: Gorgeously bound 9-volume set of Shakespeare, all uniformly bound in early 19th-century full tree calf with elaborately gilt-stamped spines. This set uses the text edited by George Steevens, one of the most important commentators on the Bard and a central figure in Shakespeare's apotheosis during the Georgian era to the title of England's greatest writer. Tree calf bindings, created by chemicals applied to the surface, which are then brushed out into branches like a tree, became popular in the late 19th century; they have the effect of marbling but on leather rather than on paper. A stunning set. Nine octavo volumes, 8.25'' x 5.25'' each. Full contemporary tree calf, spines elaborately stamped in gilt with central dot pattern, red goatskin spine labels. All edges speckled red. Half titles present; volume I with engraved frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare by Neagle. Most volumes between 460 and 550 pages. Engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedowns. Some bits of spotting to boards, only light rubbing to extremities. Interior with infrequent soil, light scattered foxing. Joints firm. Bright.
