Binding still holding the pages together. Brown spine with gold lettering.

Internally clean and crisp. Ticket of the Exchange Stationary and Bookselling Store of Alexandria to FEP, contemporary inked ownership inscription to recto of FFEP: 'Reginald Rudyerd / Capt. Royal Irish Rifles / Alexandria / Egypt / Nov: 88.' The first edition, second impression, of Rudyard Kipling's (1865-1936) first published collection of short stories, 'eight-and-twenty', according to his preface, were initially published in the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore, Punjab, British India between November 1886 and June 1887. Forty stories, 28 of which had originally appeared in the Civil and Military Gazette. The others ''are more or less new''.Covers slightly marked and a bit rubbed at the edges. Very good.
