DURRELL, Lawrence. PIED PIPER OF LOVERS.. Cassell & Company, London,, 1935.

Price: US$909.68 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: First Edition. Hardback. No Dust Jacket. Original publisher's bright blue cloth, lettered black at spine extremities a little rubbed, spine a little dulled with the usual incorrect black lettering "Pied Pipers of Lovers". Library marks, mostly faint, on free endpapers and pastedowns; two other very short library inscriptions ("4" to half title and "450" to page headed "Prologue"); small browning to top of prelims, else bright clean about VG. Durrell's extremely scarce first novel. It sold badly, was savaged in a review by John Mair in "Janus" magazine, and most copies were destroyed in the Blitz during the Second World War. Durrell refused to allow the book to be reprinted, and apparently barely twelve copies survive in libraries around the world.
