Description: 4to. 27.5 by 22 cm. viii, 70 pp. With 19 hand-colored engraved plates. Spilsbury was a naval surgeon during the Napoleonic campaigns in the Middle East , and this is his account of his travels there. The plates were drawn and engraved by W. Spark, after drawings by Spilsbury himself. The plates are a mix of illustrations of sites, of people (genre scenes) and maritime scenes. Contemporary straight-grained morocco, with gilt decorative bands around perimeter of boards, blindstamped diamond-shaped centerpiece, gilt decoration on spine, etc. Binding is rubbed and worn, especially along edges, but still attractive. Scattered foxing and soiling to the pages within.

Description: The author was the surgeon of HMS Le Tigre and has produced lovely sketches of people and ports along the Palestine and Lebanese coasts. It was first produced in a folio version. Contemporary full morocco binding with a gilt scroll along the edges of both boards. Raised bands and elaborate gilt decoration on the spine. Gilt dentilles on the inside edges of both boards. Slight professional repairs to the spine ends and corners. All edges gilt. PAGES AND PLATES ARE CLEAN WITH NO FOXING OR BROWNING. THRE IS SLIGHT OFFSETTING FROM THE PLATES. W.Spark drew and engraved the plates from original sketches by Spilsbury. Blackmer 1585, Abbey Travel 381, Atabey 1168 (1803 first edition)
