Matted in white stock with clear mylar. Petersburg Gap West Virginia drawn by W. L. Sheppard from sketches by David H Strother. From the text: "We will now push on toward Petersburg, ever and anon casting a lingering look behind, over the level perspective of the beautiful valley, and the fading blue of its northern boundaries. After a short ride of two miles, we suddenly turn into the cool and shadowy gorge of the Southern Gate, through which the river pours its clear-green waters into the valley. Crossing by an easy ford, we follow the road, which barely finds room to pass between the stream and the overhanging cliffs. Presently the gorge widens, and we call a halt to view that gigantic wall of naked rock, divided from the clouds by a ragged fringe of evergreens, doubled in height by its mirrored counterfeit in the placid river."

From 1870 to around 1895 he was the most prominent landscape illustrator in the United States. Robert Hinshelwood was born in Edinburgh in 1812 and emigrated to America in 1835 where he became renowned for his landscapes, etchings and engravings. His meticulous attention to detail was appreciated by publishing houses such as Appleton's and Harper's, and also by the Continental Bank Note Company who employed him to produce plates for the printing of currency. Robert Swain Gifford (December 23, 1840 - January 13, 1905) was an American landscape painter. He was influenced by the Barbizon school. Much of his work focuses on the landscapes of New England, where he was born. He, along with Victorian contemporaries from the White Mountain and Hudson River Schools, helped immortalize the majestic cliffs of Grand Manan in the Bay of Fundy. Price: US$65.00 + shipping

Description: Steel engraving. 4to (12½" X 9¼"). Near fine. Faint age toning at edges. Wonderfully bright and sharp heavy stock steel engraving from the first edition (1872-74) of editor William Cullen Bryant's landmark "Picturesque America; Or, The Land We Live In. A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes, Waterfalls, Shores, Canyons, Valleys, Cities, and Other Picturesque Features of Our Country," a hefty two-volume study of America's scenery in words and fine steel engraving considered highly influential to American tourism. In this depiction of the glacial valley in the western Sierra Nevada Mountains of northern California, the smooth-as-glass lake features a hunter in the right foreground lying prone in the front of a canoe, having just fired his rifle at a deer swimming ahead of him at center foreground; a sandbar and island appear at dead center, and behind that the heavily-forested lake's edge, with majestic mountains rising in the distance; the lake reflects the woods and mountains so sharply viewers almost feel they are looking at a photograph. Most of the "Picturesque America" engravings were printed on regular text-weight stock, and a much smaller number (such as this example) on a fine, heavy stock -- and unlike most of them, this particular scene has no artist and/or engraver's name included at lower right and lower left of the image.

Price: US$235.00 + shipping

Condition: Fair

Description: A Fair two-volume leather-bound set (Vol. I--1872; Vol II--1874). Each volume is a lavishly illustrated folio hardcover bound in full brown leather, with all gilt edges, and marbled end papers. The set is not rated higher because both volumes are missing a number of steel engraved plates (and in most cases, the tissues to the missing plates). Thus, Vol. I (vii + 568 pp., in 34 subject chapters) is missing 16 of its 24 steel engraved plates. Volume II (vi + 576 pp., in 31 subject chapters) is missing 6 of its 25 steel engraved plates. In addition to missing plates, there are pencil marks in each volume's list of plates, some light age tanning, and Vol. I has pencil marks on the title page and a moisture stain in the upper corner of some of the front matters. Still, the contents of each volume remain otherwise complete and mark-free, fully legible, and securely bound with each volume's hinges holding extraordinarily well given the age and heft of each volume. The all gilt edges have some scuffs and staining. The spine has four raised bands, gilt lettering, and black (not blind) stamped/tooled decorations. Similarly the boards have beveled edges and elaborate stamped/tooled decorations, plus, on the upper board, lettering and decoration in gilt. These covers have above average scuffing and rubbing, but the actual decorations are not significantly affected in this still attractive set. No ex-library markings. **Extra charges to cover shipping costs will apply to an order requesting expedited and/or international shipping because of the size and weight of this set.

A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes, Forests, Water-Falls, Shores, Canyons, Valleys, Cities, and Other Picturesque Features of Our Country. With illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists. Edited by William Cullen Bryant. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1872-1874. In forty-eight parts, "Sold Only By Subscription". 4to., blue printed wrappers, engraved frontispiece to every volume, numerous text illustrations by leading American artists of the period including F.O.C. Darley, C.G. Griswold, W.L. Shepard, Hary Fenn, Thomas Moran among others. Many wrappers show mild (chiefly dust-) soiling or a hint of sun/touch of foxing at the perimeters, with occasional slight wear to edges; a handful of issues are disbound, starting at the wraps, or over-opened. Internally, there are occasional marginal spots of foxing -- these are negligible in quantity and heaviness overall -- there is also just the occasional touch of soil. Two issues are affected by a marginal dampstain internally, including the engraved plates (one slightly, one more heavily) but all the images on the engraved plates are clean throughout the set, and many leaves are still unopened. About very good to very good plus bindings, with near fine to fine contents overall. A desirable and beautifully illustrated set in a scarce format.

Description: Publisher's full brown leather, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering on spine and cover, edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Frontispiece and additional pictorial title-page in each volume. Illustrated with 49 steel-engraved, tissue-protected plates on thick stock, in addition to hundreds of steel and wood engraved in-text illustrations. "'Picturesque America' was a conspicuous presence in the popular culture of the United States in the post-Civil War years. First published as a magazine series in Appletons' Journal, then as a subscription book, in parts, from 1872 to 1874 it reached a huge audience. Its voluminous text and over 900 pictures represented the first comprehensive celebration of the entire continental nation. By testifying to the variety, uniqueness and potential wealth of the American landscape and the advanced civilization of its cities, 'Picturesque America' laid the foundation for a resurgence of nationalism rooted in the homeland itself, rather than in institutions of democracy as would have been the case earlier in the century" (Sue Rainey, Introduction to "Creating picturesque America: monument to the natural and cultural landscape"). This huge two-volume set is most noteable for the beautifully reproduced steel engravings after the drawings of the artist, Harry Fenn, and by artists such as Thomas Moran, R. Swain Gifford, Granville Perkins, Homer Martin, Alfred R. Waud, W.L. Sheppard, and James D. Smillie. The superb plates were engraved by the finest artists, including Robert Hinshelwood, a Scots engraver who emigrated to America in 1835 where he established a considerable reputation for his work on landscapes. The views range from Niagara Falls and Mount Desert Island, to Lake Superior and the coast of Florida, to Mount Hood and Yosemite Valley. Urban views include New Orleans, Buffalo, New York harbour, Cleveland, and Milwaukee, as well as the Golden Gate harbour, before the bridge was erected. William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) was an American romantic poet, journalist, and long-time editor of the New York Evening Post. .
