Hoyem, Andrew. Picture / Poems: An Illustrated Catalogue of Drawings and Related Writings 1961-1974 [association copy]. The Arion Press, San Francisco, 1975.

Price: US$625.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: [70pp] last two leaves blank; sewn in 10 gatherings glued with card endleaves in letterpress orange Tweedweave covers with flaps & yapp edges; 289 x 287 x 11 mm. Paper issue of the first Arion Press title, presumably reserved by the author for presentation (from an edition of 500 copies, the majority of which were apparently bound in cloth). Produced to accompany his exhibition at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, California Palace of the Legion of Honor, 18 January through 16 March 1975. Including reproductions of 96 of his drawings together with an Introduction, catalogue descriptions & numerous texts & poems. The colophon reads: "Edition limited to 500 copies. Designed and produced at the printing office of Andrew Hoyem in San Francisco, with associates Glenn Todd, George F. Ritchie, & Linnea Gentry; Mackenzie & Harris for monotype composition of Goudy Californian, Phelps-Schaefer for photo-lithographic reproduction of the drawings, and Cardoza-James for binding. Completed December 1974." Signed beneath in black ink: "Andrew Hoyem". This copy has been floridly inscribed above the colophon by Robert Duncan: "Dear Vic Door, Vic a Dore [image of a door] Robert Duncan [ending in the characteristic sketch of his face]." Incorporated into the drawing is the autograph of Bobbie Louise Hawkins (at the time, with Robert Creeley) beneath which are the signatures of a child (apparently) named Joanne, & Judith Hoyem (the author's first wife & a lender to the exhibition). As he notes in the Introduction, "Since 1970 any equanimity detected in the drawings is due entirely to the presence of my wife, Judith." Duncan is also mentioned in the Introduction, both he & Andrew having contributed drawings to an exhibition at the Buzz Gallery in 1964. The recipient was Victor Coleman, poet & editor-in-chief at Coach House Press in Toronto (& printer & publisher, independently, of Duncan's Fragments of a Disorderd Devotion, 1966: Island Press in association with Gnomon Press). Coach House had recently published Duncan's Interview with George Bowering & Robert Hogg (1971) & Creeley's erotic poem, His Idea (1973), & would go on to issue the celebrated early collection of Bobbie's stories, Almost Everything (1982). Duncan had recently provided the Introduction to her collection of 15 Poems (1974: Arif) while Victor had published Bobbie earlier in IS.14 (1973). A fine familial association copy; & with respect to Arion Press, elusive with the autographs of both Hoyems. Very light edge wear.
