"Number One in a Monograph Series." Both endpapers have an area of slight browning due to binder's glue discoloration. The top edge of both boards have a small indentation. The slipcase is also bound in black cloth, matching the book. Contains 126 black and white photographs, plus a bibliography, "100 for Callahan" by Bernard Karpel at the rear. A beautifully printed collection of photographs, selected by Callahan and reproduced using 300-line screen offset process on Warren's Offset Enamel paper by the Meriden Gravure Company. The collection is included by Andrew Roth in 'The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century'. From the introduction by Hugo Weber: '[Callahan] also comes up with refinements of vision which makes one wonder whether if he might be the reincarnation of Hokusai. He makes you think he invented those leaves of grass all by himself. What puzzles me, is why he prints his photographs so dark. I think he does it to make you look twice, wanting to highlight the essence of his vision.' Limited edition of 1500 copies. Hardcover in black boards with slipcase. Bright silver titles on front cover and spine. Offsetting on hinges from publisher's glue, as in most copies. Fine in a near fine slipcase.

Description: A very sharp copy of the 1964 stated 1st printing of this first major monograph on the photographer Harry Callahan, with El Mochuelo Gallery's prospectus (an artistic, lavishly-printed, folded single-sheet) laid-in. Tight and Near Fine in its dark cloth, with bright, completely unflecked silver-titling along the front panel and spine. Customary light offsetting at the inner hinges created by the binder's glue (a minor flaw that seems to afflict virtually every copy), otherwise clean as could be internally. Folio, crisp black-and-white reproductions thruout. Also includes a very sturdy, Near Fine example of the publisher's printed slipcase.

Published in a stated edition of fifteen hundred copies, this exquisite 1964 Harry Callahan monograph is notoriously scarce as it has been widely reported that only half of these were actually ever bound for sale. A tight and bright, most handsome example (cited on pages 202-203 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 160 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and pages 168-169 of "The Book of 101 Books") marred only by the typical browning of the glue binding the endpapers to the boards - as is the case with every copy that we've ever handled - in a well-preserved, lightly-scuffed slipcase.
