Condition: Very Good

Description: This copy is in very good condition bound in burgundy cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and the upper board with black embossed decoration and blind decoration and borders to the lower board. Although the spine indicates that this copy is published by Chapman and Hall, the title page bears the name George Routledge and Sons. The page edges are uncut. There are a few rubs to the boards. There is some inevitable cracking to the gutters, but these are holding. Curiously, the endpapers have been affixed, probably by the printers / binders W. H. Smith & Son, London WC as can be noted by the embossed stamp to the obverse of the front paste down. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. There are twenty four illustrations by the artist Frank Holl. A dust wrapper is not called for. When his political rival is murdered, Phineas is thrown under suspicion and eventually finds himself standing trial at the Old Bailey. The situation is complicated by the presence of two women in his life: his old flame Lady Laura, whose estranged husband is determined to destroy Phineas's reputation, and the wealthy and enimgatic widow, Madame Max.
