Description: This copy is in very good condition bound in burgundy cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and the upper board with black embossed decoration and blind decoration and borders to the lower board. Although the spine indicates that this copy is published by Chapman and Hall, the title page bears the name George Routledge and Sons. The page edges are uncut. There are a few rubs to the boards. There is some inevitable cracking to the gutters, but these are holding. Curiously, the endpapers have been affixed, probably by the printers / binders W. H. Smith & Son, London WC as can be noted by the embossed stamp to the obverse of the front paste down. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. There are twenty four illustrations by the artist Frank Holl. A dust wrapper is not called for. It is the fourth of the "Palliser" series of novels and is a sequel to the second book of the series, Phineas Finn. In the fourth of the 'Palliser' stories, Trollope follows Phineas Finn's return to the dangerous world of Westminster politics. When his political rival is murdered, Phineas is thrown under suspicion and eventually finds himself standing trial at the Old Bailey. The situation is complicated by the presence of two women in his life: his old flame Lady Laura, whose estranged husband is determined to destroy Phineas's reputation, and the wealthy and enimgatic widow, Madame Max. Trollope, Anthony. Phineas Redux. Routledge, London, 1874.

Price: US$375.00 + shipping

Description: Extremely scarce first1-volume edition in the original green, sand-grain cloth. This novel was originally issued in monthly instalments and then published in 2 volumes by Chapman & Hall in December 1873 (dated 1874). Sadleir's information about the subsequent fate of this book is inaccurate, as there was definitely a 2 in 1 edition issued by Chapman & Hall (of which he was unaware), prior to the transfer of first edition sheets to Routledge. The present copy is, however, another edition unknown to Sadleir and, as far as I have been able to ascertain, never previously described. It is in the same binding as used by Chapman & Hall on their 2 in 1 binding up of first edition sheets, apart from the appearance of Routledge in place of Chapman & Hall at the foot of the spine. However, the book was clearly reprinted for this edition as the pagination is continuous from 1-669 and at the end of the text, which was, incidentally printed by W.H. Smith and Sons, there is a code date of 10-9-74 (i.e.September 1874), 9 months after the 2-volume first edition sheets were printed. This is, therefore, the first one-volume edition and comes complete with the 24 plates by Frank Holl. Routledge title page dated 1874. Original binding with decorative stamping in black and gilt fancy lettering. Very neat rebacking and restoration to head and tail of spine using matching cloth. Sepia endpapers internally strengthened at gutters. Now a perfectly sound and attractive copy of this rarity.

Trollope Anthony. PHINEAS REDUX. London Chapman and Hall 1874, 1874.

Price: US$2475.00 + shipping

Description: 2 volumes. First edition. This set with the fine provenance of Morris L. Parrish, with his engraved bookplate, and with the later bookplate of Vincent Newton. Illustrated with 24 plates engraved on wood. Tall 8vo, in the publisher's original handsome decorated cloth, the upper covers with an ornate panel in black with central gilt tooled device all in a botanical motif, the spine with rules in black and decorative bands and lettering in gilt. vi, [1], 339; vi, [1], 329 pp. A very handsome set of this work notoriously scarce in original cloth. The textblock is quite fresh and clean with no spotting, a touch to the prelims, the cloth still bright and attractive, some expert and very discreet refurbishment to the spine panels preserving the original decorated cloth entirely. A SUPERIOR COPY OF THE RARE FIRST EDITION. PHINEAS REDUX can be considered a sequel to PHINEAS FINN and both are part of Trollope's "Palliser" series of novels. Along with the Parliamentary themes of British and Irish politics common to all of the Palliser books we find Lady Eustace returns after being the primary character of the third book of the series. One of the most celebrated book collectors of his generation, Morris L. Parrish (1867 - 1944) amassed one of the greatest collections of the Victorian novelists ever assembled. By the onset of the First World War, he had become one of the world's most highly respected collectors, his taste, technique, and acumen setting a standard still followed to this day. Much of his collection, approximately 6,500 volumes and around 1,250 manuscripts, now rests in its own room in the Special Collections section of Princeton University Library.
