Discrete bump signs, DJ worn, with some small holes. Edges a little dusty. Clean inside. USADO / GEBRAUCHT / USED. Front illustration: Portrait of Samuel Johnson, by James Barry, c. 1777. Back jacket ill.: An illustration from the late 14th or early 15th century manuscript of 'Pearl'. The poet sleeps by the river. Weight: 1,84 kg! Here in one volume you will find a complete guide to the literature of the English-speaking world for the general reader and the student. The 'Cambridge Guide' provides easy reference to the literature of Great Britain and Ireland, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the West Indies and Nigeria - to every part of the English-speaking world which contributed to the great treasure-house of poetry, fiction, drama, philosophy and satire which is one of the lasting achievements of Western civilization. Arranged in alphabetical order and containing approximately 1,000,000 words of text, the entries range from the beginnings of English literature in the 6-7th centuries, when vernacular speech in the British Isles became a written language, to the present day. The reader will find brief biographies of authors, descriptions of and comments on their major works, and notes on the outstanding characters created by poets, playwrights and novelists. In addition there are essays on 'The English Language' by Barbara M.H. Strang and 'The Bible in English' by C.H. Sisson. The enquiring reader and student will find articles on a wide range of subjects covering literary forms such as the Metrical Romances, surveying writers with a common theme like the Metaphysical Poets, explaining important religious writings such as the Marprelate pamphlets and historical events, such as the closure of the playhouses, which crucially affected the literature of the time. (Historical figures whose influence on English literature requires recognition - King Alfred, Thomas Cranmer, Sir Walter Raleigh, Benjamin Franklin among them - are also included.) The book is illustrated with more than 300 carefully selected black and white pictures which bring to life the great literary figures of the past and the age in which they lived. Description: pp. 224-248. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: Macbeth poses a fundamental problem for the aesthetician. Modern readers as disparate as the composer Ernest Bloch, the anthropologist Loren Eiseley, the poet Kenneth Rexroth, and the cinéaste Roman Polanski have testified to its enduring power. And yet the recurring challenge, as A. C. Bradley long ago recognized and as Rexroth has reaffirmed, is that Shakespeares play does not fit the criteria for a tragedy laid down in Aristotles Poetics. Lily Bess Campbell, who referred to Hatnlet, Othello, and King Lear as "tragedies" (of, respectively, Grief, Jealousy, and Wrath in Old Age), neatly sidestepped the issue in Macbeth by calling it a "study" (in Fear). Most critics have nevertheless tried to explain this drama (and other similar works) according to the Aristotelian theory of tragedy. Their attempt is subsumed under a larger problem, outlined by Bernard Beckerman: the disproportion in critical refinement between the Poetics and the primitive theories attempting to describe alternate dramatic species. Beckerman therefore calls for "a comprehensive theory which'encompasses but goes beyond the Aristotelian and yet within which individual works can be located." This can be developed only by examining those dramas which do not yield to Aristotelian analysis. For this reason, Macbeth raises questions of a special kind, perennially fascinating to those who wish to extend critical theory in the direction of greater flexibility and subtlety. If one assumes that criticism must follow creationthat the critics job is not to lay down a priori rules, but to examine the workings of a play which experience has shown to be effectivethen evidently Macbeth requires us to develop some aesthetic principles that have not heretofore been formulated. - Wikipedia: Mary Elizabeth Grenander (21 November 1918 28 May 1998), was a professor of English and philanthropist, for whom the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections & Archives of the University Libraries of the University at Albany, the State University of New York is named. She was an authority on Ambrose Bierce. Description: This is a study of Church and Society between the two World Wars as seen through the eyes of an able, caustic, individualist churchman. Herbert Hensley Henson held strong opinions on all subjects. He was the critic, on moral grounds, of the behaviour of the trade unions. He came into fierce controversy with the miners' national leaders. He strenuously defended the establishment of the Church of England, and then, because the House of Commons behaved badly over the Prayer Book, became its most vocal assailant. He stood for the right of Christians to profess their faith while remaining agnostic about miracles. He helped the Church to accept more modern attitudes to divorce. At times he was the most unpopular person among the Churches. But by courage he won a rueful respect, and by compassion he won from some a smiling admiration. 1984. Reprint. A fine copy with a previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown. The d/w is unclipped and near fine with light edge rubbing only. 2.45 Centimeters X 14.7 Centimeters X 21.9 Centimeters

Mourners, mute and reverent, trooped through the silent Moscow streets in the January cold to stand in line outside his bier. The year was 1924 and, as Nina Tumarkin shows, the process by which the founder of Bolshevism was subtly transformed into a demigod had been underway for some time. His idealization as a cult figure had been developing throughout the civil war, furnishing the Communist Party with a powerful legitimizing symbol. The stability of the new state required some such central image, and Tumarkin traces the piecemeal development of organized political veneration through Lenin's long illness and immediately after his death. With the leader gone, the regime that ruled Russia in his name sought to sustain the emotions of solidarity unleashed by his death. So the cult was formed, celebrating Lenin's living power through his writings, his portraits, and his body, embalmed and displayed in the hastily built Lenin Mausoleum. The growth of the Lenin cult was in part spontaneous, with roots in peasant culture, Orthodox ritual, and the peculiar history of the Russian revolutionary intelligentsia. But Tumarkin forcefully demonstrates that the cult was, to an even greater degree, a planned operation designed to create a secular religion through which the masses might more easily be won over. Until now, the mystical and ritualistic aspects of Communist Party politics have been underemphasized in works dealing with early Soviet history. Lenin Lives! demonstrates the galvanizing power of ritual in the establishment of a post~revolutionary regime. This book is enhanced by striking illustrations.

Description: As the bells in the tower of Sydney's General Post Office chimed eight o'clock on the evening of Friday 1 July 1932, the peals were picked up by a microphone and carried to every State of the Federation. 'This is the Australian Broadcasting Commission,' said the announcer, Conrad Charlton. So begins K.S. Inglis's compelling history of the first fifty years of the ABC. In a sparkling tour de force Inglis shows us the ABC's triumphs and failures, its great medley of personalities and the effects it has had on Australian public life. Based on the Commission's own archives, on newspapers and journals, on a rich assortment of interviews and on the author's own listening and viewing, this is a social history of the highest order. 1983, First edition. A near fine copy only marked by a previous owners bookplate on the front pastedown. The d/w is fine.

Description: Paperback. Abraham Geiger gave the Reform Movement in Judaism its intellectual stature and theoretical justification. He possessed rabbinic learning, profound interest in problems of theology and philosophy, a gift for exposition, and great earnestness. All these he enlisted in the service of Judaism-a Judaism transplanted into the climate of nineteenth-century Germany. His struggle against the traditionalists forms an interesting chapter in the history of German Jewry, yet is now of even greater interest to American Jews, because Geiger ultimately found more convinced and ardent followers on this side of the Atlantic than he had had in Europe. The late Dr. Max Wiener was a keen student of Jewish intellectual history. An admirer of Geiger, his biographical introduction to this volume is sympathetic and balanced. But the real Geiger-a great scholar, profound thinker, and ardent Jew-emerges from the excerpts of his own writings to which the major portion of this book is devoted. The reader will find here illustrations of Geiger's viewpoint as he wrote to friends, as he delved into the origins of the biblical text, as he engaged in religious polemics, and as he addressed his own congregation, trying to draw them on the principles for which he labored. This reprint edition will be of interest to anyone who seeks to understand the intellectual roots of liberal Judaism. Description: "Phenomenology: Dialogues & Bridges," edited by Ronald Bruzina and Bruce Wilshire, stands as Number 8 in the Series - Selected Studies in Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy. This Softcover edition is in Very Good condition, with the covers presenting great shape, exhibiting only light rubbing to edges and a minor small crease to the bottom corner of the front cover. The binding maintains a square and tight structure, ensuring a durable reading experience. While there is light abrasion to the half-title page, the interior pages overall remain clean and unmarked, preserving the content's integrity. For added protection during transit, the book will be carefully packaged, and an electronic tracking number from USPS will be provided free of charge. This volume is a convergence of issues that were previously kept separate. Notable Continental thinkers such as Paul Ricoeur, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Otto Pöggeler, and others contribute to innovative discussions. The book explores diverse topics, from the interrelation of phenomenology and pragmatism to the phenomenological powers of theater. The collection also delves into the life and thought of Martin Heidegger, the connection between phenomenology and Meinong's thought, and central issues in Merleau-Pontys philosophy. A section of the book is dedicated to the challenges in connecting phenomenology with the theory of natural science. By fostering novel and provocative dialogue, this volume advances the interchange between American and Continental thinkers. For additional information or to view more pictures of this intellectually stimulating work, please don't hesitate to contact me. Your inquiries will be promptly addressed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of this thought-provoking book.

Description: Paperback. The Tao and the Daimon examines a central theme in religious studies: the question of the authority and authenticity of traditional religious faith and practice (tao) in light of the challenge from the spirit of critical reason (Socrates' daimon). From a non-judgmental, historical standpoint, it develops the dialectical relation between religion and rational inquiry. Neville employs a philosophical system to set a task for reflection, making it possible to see how Eastern and Western religious traditions differ, overlap, contradict, and reinforce one another. The central chapters are detailed studies of theologically interesting elements in Christianity, Buddhism, taoism, and Neoconfucianism. How can one judge of the higher truths of another religion without having practiced it? Can the tao and the daimon, after all, be reconciled purely in the conceptual realm of speculative philosophy? Neville recognizes the very real differences between conceptualizing and practicing and the very real differences in understanding that can result. At the same time, he transcends the problem by identifying (and exemplifying in his own work) speculative philosophy as a tao in itself, "a new locus of religious significance, our own scholarly interpretation, new creations of the holy out of practiced scholarly piety toward the old." Description: 1983, xv, 496pp. Very good copy in very good dustjacket. Ten lines partially underlined in first 13 pages, otherwise clear. The Maharatnakuta Sutra so one of the five major sutra groups in the Mahayana canon. Of the two great schools of Buddhism, Mahayana has the greatest numero of adherents worldwide--- it prevails among the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Tibetans, and Vietnamese--- and contains within it a number of movements, notably Zen, which have been of growing interest in the West in recent decades. Yet despite this increased attention and enormous following, translations of Mahayana scriptures have been scarce and fragmentary; clearly, a comprehensive translation of a major work within the canon was called for. This volume addresses that need. It contains 22 of the 49 sutras of the Maharatnakuta (or "Treasury") Sutra, many translated for the first time in a Western language, selected and arranged to give the modern reader a progressive introduction to one of the world's major religious traditions. Subjects covered include maya and miracles, the teachings on Consciousness, Emptiness, and monastic discipline, the Mystical Light of the Tathagata, and the devotional practice of Pure Land, making this a comprehensive source book of Mahayana Buddhism hitherto unavailable in English. The book also includes an introduction to provide historical and interpretive guidance, annotations that assist in the comprehension of difficult passages, and an extensive glossary that will be valuable to specialist and layman alike. A team of scholars, working in Taiwan, spent eight years translating the Treasury's million words from Chinese, using Tibetan texts for comparison and checking each sutra with an international board of scholars. In the course of translating from the original, special effort was made to retain both the devotional style appropriate for religious reading and the precision required by the scholar, while presenting the material with a clarity and flow that would make it accessible to the Western layman. The editors then selected, arranged, and annotated the 22 sutras presented here.

Description: nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - These original essays offer evidence that a growing number of Anglo-American philosophers are finding in the classical discussion of God's existence and nature fertile sources for critical reflection on issues in the philosophy of religion.Nelson Pike challenges Aquinas' claim that God is not responsible for evil and shows how the rejection of this claim bears on the problem of evil. Richard Swinburne defends the classical Christian understanding of heaven and hell, arguing that it is both philosophically plausible and compatible with the Christian conception of God's goodness. Philip Quinn proposes a defensible version of the classical assertion that God's conserving a creature in existence is tantamount to his continuously creating that creature.Thomas Flint and Alfred Freddoso present an analysis of omnipotence which they claim to be both philosophically adequate and consonant with the orthodox Christian belief that God is both omnipotent and incapable of sinning. James Ross's main purpose is to dislodge the assumption that God's power is properly and adequately thought of as the power to cause (or bring about or actualize) states of affairs. Clement Dore reinterprets and defends Descartes' often maligned Fifth Meditation argument for God's existence. Finally, Mark Jordan explicates the metaphysical foundations of Aquinas' doctrine of divine names.

Description: Second edition. An exceptional copy. 1983 Mass Market Paperback. 225 pp. Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain), also known as Acharya Rajneesh, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, and later as Osho, was an Indian godman, philosopher, mystic, and founder of the Rajneesh movement. Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (born December 11, 1931, Kuchwada [now in Madhya Pradesh], India?died January 19, 1990, Pune) was an Indian spiritual leader who preached an eclectic doctrine of Eastern mysticism, individual devotion, and sexual freedom. As a young intellectual, Rajneesh visited with and absorbed insights from teachers of the various religious traditions active in India. He studied philosophy at the University of Jabalpur, earning a B.A. in 1955; he began teaching there in 1957, after earning an M.A. from the University of Saugar. At the age of 21 he had an intense spiritual awakening, which inspired in him the belief that individual religious experience is the central fact of spiritual life and that such experiences cannot be organized into any single belief system. In 1966 Rajneesh resigned from his university post and became a guru (spiritual guide) and a teacher of meditation. In the early 1970s he initiated people into the order of sannyasis, who traditionally renounced the world and practiced asceticism. Reinterpreting the idea of being a sannyasi in terms of detachment rather than asceticism, Rajneesh taught his disciples to live fully in the world without being attached to it. The first Westerners came to Rajneesh in the early 1970s, and in 1974 the new headquarters of his movement was established in Pune. The basic practice taught at the centre was called dynamic meditation, a process designed to allow people to experience the divine. The centre also developed a diversified program of New Age healing adopted from the West. Rajneesh became well-known for his progressive approach to sexuality, which contrasted with the renunciation of sex advocated by many other Indian teachers. Rajneesh moved to the United States in 1981 and, the following year, incorporated Rajneeshpuram, a new city he planned to build on an abandoned ranch near Antelope, Oregon. During the next few years many of his most-trusted aides abandoned the movement, which came under investigation for multiple felonies, including arson, attempted murder, drug smuggling, and vote fraud in Antelope. In 1985 Rajneesh pleaded guilty to immigration fraud and was deported from the United States. He was refused entry to 21 countries before returning to Pune, where his ashram soon grew to 15,000 members. In 1989 Rajneesh adopted the Buddhist name Osho. After his death his disciples, convinced that he had been the victim of government intrigue, voiced their belief in his innocence and vowed to continue the movement he started. In the early 21st century it had some 750 centres located in more than 60 countries. - Britannica

Enlarged edition suppressed in the U.S.A. since the 1980s. Fayez Sayegh, the late Palestinian intellectual, activist and diplomat, warned everyone for decades that about the atrocities and active campaign to destroy anyone who speaks out. Palestinians have been correctly identifying Israel as an apartheid state for decades. Exposes the master plan of zionist propaganda in as presented in this volume. It has come to pass and the words, phrases and news reports only shown in the America are by the book responses and part of the plan to sway the American public at the expense of the Palestinian people. 58 pages. Insured post. Regardless of opinion on the matter, this monograph presents and provides a Palestinian and Arab perspective and points of contention on the slanted spun information served to the West and specifically America. While doing this, the author falls within the establishment perspective of the West, evidenced by his educational and professional pedigree. Fayez Sayegh was born in 1922 in Kharaba, Syria, where his father was a Presbyterian minister. He grew up in Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee in what was then Palestine. He received his B.A. and M. A. at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon; and his Ph. D. at Georgetown University, Washington D. C. He was a visiting lecturer in Political Science at Yale; a visiting associate professor of Political Science and Philosophy at Stanford; and Professor of International Studies at Macalester College. Later, he was a fellow at St. Anthony's College, Oxford. Sayegh published several other books and monographs including: "The Palestinian Refugees; The Arab-Israeli Conflict; The Record of Israel at the United Nations; and, The Hammarskjold Proposals." Sayegh was President of the Palestine Arab Congress and Honorary Chairman of the Institute of Arab-American Affairs. He was also 'Charge d'Affaires' of the Arab States Delegations' Office at the U. N.; Counsellor of the Yemen Delegation to the U. N.; and Advisor to the Delegation of Lebanon to the U. N. Finally, he founded the Research Center of the Palestine Liberation Organization; and served as member of its Executive Committee. Sayegh died in 1980 from a heart attack while in New York City at the rather young age of 58. Interestingly, he died the same night and in the same city that John Lennon was slain, Tuesday, December 9th. Also, of note is that it is rather difficult to pin down the exact date as rarely mentioned, but rather simply as December, 1980. At the time, Sayegh was a senior adviser to the Foreign Ministry of Kuwait. He had been the principal author of the 1975 U.N. resolution denouncing Zionism as a form of racism. This resolution denouncing Zionism was passed by the General Assembly on Nov. 10, 1975 by a vote of 72 to 35 with 32 abstentions and three delegations absent. It defined Zionism as a "form of racism and racial discrimination." The vote was denounced by Israel, the United States and France. Dr. Sayegh said that the resolution he authored was in line with an earlier U.N. resolution on racial discrimination that had denounced "distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on national or ethnic origin." Zionism, he said, was a movement which manifests itself by "excluding some people on the basis of their being non-Jews and including others on the basis of their being Jews -- Jewishness being defined officially as an ethnic and not strictly religious definition." Description: First and only edition; a rare and lavish production describing a major project for Saddam Hussein which never came to fruition. The mosque formed part of Hussein's early initiative to rebuild and beautify Baghdad, with Baghdadi urban planner Rifat Chadirji appointed to oversee architectural planning and preparations for the 7th Non-Aligned Movement Summit in 1982. Rifat Chadirji (1926-2020) is widely regarded as the father of modern Iraqi architecture. He was a pivotal cultural figure in Baghdad between the 1950s and 70s. He made his name when General Abd al-Karim Qasim commissioned him to design several memorials in Baghdad of which two were built: the Freedom Monument and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier (both 1959, the latter destroyed in 1982 to make way for a statue of Hussein). He fell out of favour during the presidency of Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, and in 1978 was imprisoned for life at Abu Ghraib. However, Saddam Hussein held Chadirji's abilities in very high regard, and after taking power in 1979, had him released and appointed counsellor to the mayoralty of Baghdad, responsible for architectural planning and for the NAM Summit (1980-82). The master plan comprised several large-scale projects, which Chadirji was instrumental in commissioning and co-ordinating: in 1982 the Presidency established a State Grand Mosque Committee chaired by Chadirji: "To revive [Baghdad's] pioneering, historical, spiritual and intellectual role. the fighting President and Leader Sadam Hussein. directed his attentions towards the building of the Grand Mosque [to] embody the continuance of the cultural heritage and highlight the aspirations of the nation so that it may act as a distinctive religious instructor to the State" (pp. 6-7). Despite his opposition to the regime at the time, Chadirji remained insistent that his work was always for the country, the people, in line with the principles of his concept of "International Regionalism"; "I had absolute power. I was the consultant that everyone came to for advice. I was the one who made a difference and my work was never questioned" (MEA). The Committee invited 22 Arab and overseas firms to enter the competition, of these, seven were asked to submit plans - Iraqi architects Kathan al Madfai, Mohamed S. Makiya, and Maath Alousi, the Japanese Minoru Takeyama, Palestinian Rasem Badran, Catalan Ricardo Bofill, and the American practice Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown. Entrants were required to identify the various area specialists, including those in Islamic history and architecture, with whom they intended work. The site, away from the city centre on Rabia Street, was required to include a prayer hall for 30,000, a women's prayer space for 3,000, prayer yards, a dedicated library for 100,000 books and 50,000 manuscripts, conference rooms, a restaurant, teaching institute, accommodation for 40 visiting imams, shops and parking. Plans were submitted on the deadline in January 1983 and Chadirji, who had stepped down as chair in November of the previous year, joined a three-person adjudication committee alongside architectural historians Dogan Kuban, noted for his painstaking restoration of the 12th-century Kalenderhane Mosque in Istanbul, and Stephano Bianca, the Swiss expert on the Arab urban environment. They unanimously awarded first place to Badran, with Bofill and Alousi invited to give support. The introduction to the document sets out details of the brief and establishes the context in terms of the history of the mosque in Islam and Arab civilization; this is followed by outlines of the seven schemes, with the architects adumbrating their distinct philosophies in terms of approach, symbolism, history, and materials, accompanied by detailed models, plans, elevations and sections. However, after this extended period of planning, the Iran-Iraq War intervened, the NAM Summit was moved to New Delhi, and Saddam Hussein declined to take forward the committee's recommendations. Chadirji was offered a fellowship at Harvard which enabled him to settle in the United States where he remained for more than a decade before moving to London; his brief return to Iraq in 2009 "saddened" him. Perhaps the main legacy of the State Mosque project was the fillip given to the career of Rasem Badran by Chadirji's personal invitation to become involved. Badran was subsequently responsible for Riyadh's Great Mosque and accompanying Old City Center Redevelopment - which won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995, the King Abdul Aziz Historical Centre and King Abdul Aziz Foundation for Research and Archives - and Saudi Ministry of Culture complex as part of the Al Bujairi redevelopment. In recognition of his architectural achievements in the country, in 2022 Badran was granted Saudi nationality. Provenance: laid in are two items written in English and addressed to Turkish architect Asuman Uz: an invitation from the Iraqi Embassy in Ankara, printed in black with the Eagle of Saladin emblem in gilt: "Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq / His Excellency and Miss Taha M. Al-Kaisi requests the pleasure of the company of Miss Asuman Uz at a Buffet Dinner on Thursday, 5 January 1984 at 20.00 hours"; small complimentary card with hand-written note: "From The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research / With compliments To Miss Asuman Uz". "MEA sits down with Rifat Chadirji, the father of Iraqi architecture", Middle East Architecture, November 2017. Just six locations world-wide: British Library, Canadian Centre for Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture, Universities of Colorado and Exeter. Landscape folio. Original gold cloth, lettered in gilt, colour photographic image mounted on the front board, edges gilt. Profusely illustrated.
