Description: THIRD EDITION. - October 1911, issued the same month as the first printing, and the same format. Large 8vo, (8 x 5.8 inches). Complete with mono illustrated title and twelve full page plates by Bedford. Gilt decorated green cloth boards illustrated with Peter Pan, two Mermaids and the Crocodile, all within a decorative border, on front board. A remarkable, tight and fresh copy with a small neat previous owner name to the front free endpaper and a tiny amount of foxing to just a handful of pages. The endpapers have some offsetting as a result of the glue used in production otherwise this is a near fine and bright copy of this classic book in the rare publishers original dustwrapper. The wrapper reproduces the front board and spine of the book in gold onto dark green paper. Spine sunned. Some small chips to the edges, most notably at the top lower hinge and the very bottom of the spine, and some splitting strengthened to the rear of the paper with archival tape. Overall a very good dustwrapper on a fine and bright book. A superior copy of this classic title, featuring Captain Hook, Never-Never Land, The Lost Boys, Nana and, of course, Tinkerbell (or Tinker Bell as she is named in this story). --- More photos available on request.

J. M. Barrie [James Matthew Barrie]. Peter and Wendy in rare American first issue jacket. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1911.

Price: US$6500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: First American Edition, first issue (simultaneous with the Hodder and Stoughton London edition). The true first is distinguished by three points: 1. Scribner's seal, 2."Published October, 1911" to copyright page and 3. A "$1.50 net" price to the jacket's front cover (later issues priced at $2.50 on the front flap). As such copies without jackets (though still published October, 1911 & with seal) are of uncertain issuance, while those without the conspicuous oddly-placed price are second states. A fine copy with Peter, Mermaids & the Click-Tock Crocodile to the front and Captain Hook to the spine. First issue jacket repeats the binding images and adds the price. Jacket frayed along top with not entirely successful archival repairs from long ago. Book itself is as new: tight hinges and gutters; no owners' names, no bookplates, no sunning nor wear; gilt is bright & clean. "Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860 - 1937) was a Scottish author and dramatist, the child of a family of small-town weavers, and best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. He was educated in Scotland but moved to London, where he developed a career as a novelist and playwright. There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired him to write about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (included in The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a "fairy play" about an ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. Peter Pan quickly overshadowed his previous work [and was] credited with popularizing the name Wendy, which was very uncommon previously. Barrie unofficially adopted the Davies boys following the deaths of their parents. Before his death, he gave the rights to the Peter Pan works to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, which continues to benefit from them." Description: HARDBACK - A fine book with the pictoral frontispiece, and an additional eleven black and white illustrations by F.D. Bedford. The green boards are fresh, and the gilt illustration to the front panel, and to the spine are fine and unfaded. The book is tightly bound with sharp spine tips and corners. ( there is a small bump to the bottom corner of the front board, but the corner is still sharp ) Internally, the pages are very clean and white, with just the odd foxing spot throughout the text and a little dustiness to the top page block. The dust wrapper is in fine condition for its age. There is very minor chipping to the spine tips and to the corners of the front and rear flap folds. There is fading to the spine, but the gilt is fresh and un faded to the front board. In summary, a superb book in its original first issue dust wrapper which is in excellent condition for its age, especially as the wrapper is very thin and notoriously fragile. Please view the numerous scans for an indication as to the titles overall condition.
