FIRST EDITION. This is one of the works which directly brought about the passing of the Licensing Act in 1737 which provided for the future review and licensing by the Lord Chamberlain of all new plays before they could be performed. Fielding's comedy satirises politicians and actors with a play-within-a-play, where actors attempt to put on a production about a local election. It was the success of the season at the Haymarket Theatre, with 40 performances.
