Description: 1770, Printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis, printers to the University. Frontispiece picture. 10-1/4" x 16", 552 pgs. Was a reference book in a library – only markings are labels on inside of front and back covers and pencil number on a couple pages. Poor hardcover. Front cover detached as is the title page; Title page has tears, chips, brown spots and ink notations. Cover in rough condition. Pages easily readable but have some light toning and foxing. Oversize and heavy book - extra postage charges for priority mail in the U.S. and all mail out of the U.S. International mail is extremely expensive.

Very well re-bound with original boards, marbled endpapers and free endpapers, new spine in style with headbands. Text block very clean and sound, small loss to corner of page 1 (not affecting text).

Subscriber list, summary of the arguments within the poem. 466pp of the poem plus index. Portrait of Milton on title page and marbled endpapers. 3 pages at front have a tear and there is an ink stain on the edge. (see pictures). From the library of Lockhart of Cleghorn with their bookplate on the front pastedown.
