Description: A smart mid eighteenth century edition of the second part of Milton's epic, in Baskerville type. A smart Baskerville edition of Milton's poem, which was first published in 1761.Baskerville was an innovative and pioneering type designer and printer. His typefaces were greatly admired by Benjamin Franklin. The Baskerville type is regarded as a transitional serif typeface intended as a refinement of the old-style typefaces of the period such as Calson.Sharing similar theological themes to Milton's earlier 'Paradise Lost', the poem uses blank verse to deal withthe temptation of Christ, as recounted in the Gospel of Luke.ESTC reference number T194571. With leaves H1 and P7 cancels, as called for.With the armorial bookplates of British peer and politician Oliver Brett, and prominent and wealthy solicitor Robert Parker of Halifax to the front pastedown. [1760] Hardcover. Bound in full brown leather with raised cords on the spine. Spine label (chipped) stamped, ‘Newton’s Milton.’ Another spine label with volume number is missing. Front board attached by the bottom cord only. Subscribers list followed by 72 page life of Milton, then 416 pages of the poem (it is complete). Bookplate on inside front cover with the initials RJW and The Milton Library and Wickenheiser. Book measures 6.75 x 9.75 inches. Margins are cut closer than is ordinary with Baskerville’s work, which usually leaves a lot of white space. Printed in medium quality laid paper, without a watermark. Binding good and tight. Pages clean, with very little foxing. First published in May of 1760, with a companion volume containing Paradise Regained. Baskerville had printed copies of Paradise lost in both 1758 and 1759; those were 2 volume sets. This is a single volume version. A nice example of Baskerville’s work in original eighteenth century binding.
