Description: Set of two hardcover volumes, in full leather bindings. Five raised bands along each spine, with decorative gold stamping on spine and bordering each cover. Title stamped in gold on red title label. Brown marbled endpapers, with a previous owner's bookplate neatly affixed inside each cover. Boards are scuffed and worn around the corners, with wear along the spine as well. The front board to the second volume is hanging on by a single cord -- all others boards are strongly attached. Volume I -- The title page has the full, long text of the title with an illustration of Milton. The frontispiece is a nude woman by a lake, with the caption taken from Book IV, line 480. 229 pages. Published 1796. A gift inscription is written along the top edge of the title page, "form an affectionate father," dated 1830. Binding is strong and pages free of markings. The frontispiece for volume two is Adam and Eve, with the caption "on she came, led by her heavenly Maker." Same gift inscription on title page. All pages free of markings. Books measure 10 x 6 1/4 inches. A handsome, if worn, set for the shelf or display. Extra shipping may be required for international or priority delivery.

Includes 12 delightful engraved plates by White, Saunders, and Heath, after R. Corbould and H. Singleton. Volume I has an engraved title by J. Roper with engraved portrait vignette medallion of Milton by W. Ridley. Marbled endpapers. Internal hinge cracked , string intact and quite firm. Light stain on title page at the bottom corner. Remarkably clean throughout with few faint fox marks. Full leather scuffed baords with faded gilt decoration at all edges. Scuffed gilt decorated spine with red leather title label. Corners bumped.

Flat spine gilt-ruled into six compartments, gilt lettered black morocco label in second compartment, gilt lettered direct in third, remaining compartments gilt tooled. All edges gilt. Spines faded, light to moderate foxing. A handsome copy in a fine late 18th century binding.
