D. H. Lawrence. Pansies. [S.n.], [S.l.], 1929.

Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: [xii], 125 pp., half-title page printed in red, 8vo, pink textured card wrapper. A copy of the "definitive" (i.e., unexpurgated) edition, a variant with the fourteen poems not included in earlier printings of the first edition. No publication or printer data is included in this variant (perhaps to protect the publisher/printer, given the UK postal authorities' earlier seizures of two typescripts of this work), although Lawrence's introduction is dated 1929. P. R. Stephensen's name is given as the printer of an earlier definitive edition variant (500 copies privately printed for subscribers; see Roberts and Poplawski A47c), "but Lawrence . implied that Stephensen was not responsible for the book. Actually it was [Progressive Bookshop owner and publisher] Charles Lahr who arranged for the printing and saw it through the press" (Roberts and Poplawski, p. 172). And "later a so-called popular edition was printed from the same plates and issued in heavy pink covers for distribution on the Continent" (ibid.). The present copy is an example of this popular edition in heavy pink covers. Interestingly, the updated setting used for this variant that now includes the fourteen poems can perhaps be discerned from examining the typesetting of the table of contents, where the start of the titles of eleven of these fourteen are not quite aligned with that of the other titles. A very good copy overall; contents near fine, with a some very scattered small spots of foxing, wrapper edges a bit worn and chipped, with some darkening.

Lawrence, D. H.. Pansies Privately printed edition of 50 copies. P. R. Stephensen, London, 1929.

Price: US$288.73 + shipping

Description: This is an unbound, unnumbered and unsigned copy and therefore probably surplus to the print run limited to the 50 signed copies privately printed for subscribers only by P. R. Stephensen June, 1929. Sepia portrait frontispiece, decorative title in blue & brown, printed on japon paper. Unbound and in nine gatherings, 8vo, contained in near contemporary dark green card portfolio with label to front. "This little bunch of fragments is offered as a bunch of pensees, anglice pansies; a handful of thoughts. Or, if you will have the other derivation of pansy, from panser, to dress or soothe a wound; these are my tender administrations to the mental and emotional wounds we suffer from. Or you can have heartsease if you like, since the modern heart could certainly do with it." Contains the poems "The Noble Englishman" and "Don't Look at Me" banned in the Secker edition. There was also a privately printed, paper bound edition of 500 copies for subscribers only published by Stephensen later in 1929. Book in good condition. The japon paper is lightly toned and there is the occasional small mark or very light spotting. The portfolio containing the unbound pages is in fair condition, being rather worn.
