"Painted Veils is the literary turnstile into lubricious, hard-drinking, wise-cracking twentieth-century New York, as Huneker was himself the incarnation of the cultured bohemianism of the glamorous days when the city was young, irresponsible, Dionysian. This book is New York in any year between 1880 and 1900. It is the most vital and vivid picture ever written of those decades by a man who lived its life, a man Who made it his own, absorbing it with every breath, incorporating it in every cell of his body and brain. For this man Huneker was a voracious shark of the intellectual and of the sensuous life. He was a veritable Moloch of arts and persons, beers and food. He was curious about all things, a sleuth of all sensations and thoughts. To him Experience was Truth. A clean very presentable copy.

James HUNEKER. Painted Veils: [a novel]. New York: Boni and Liveright, 1920.

Price: US$64.98 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Paper-backed boards. Spine darkened, covers slightly marked, corners rubbed. Edition limited to 1200 numbered copies signed by the author, this copy inscribed additionally on the limitation page by the publisher to Julie Lasdun, "Dear Julie This is the only copy of this book that I have been able to lay my hands on in two years. If dear old Huneker were alive he would say something special in it for you. Failing that accept it from its publisher as a true evidence of his friendship. Horace B.R. January, 1924". Painted Veils, originally entitled "Istar, Daughter of Sin", was the author's only novel. James Huneker (1857-1921), a critic, turned down by his usual publisher, Scribner's, took his risqué story to Horace Liveright. "The book," records Liveright's biographer Tom Dardis, "recounts the activities of a Wagnerian soprano called 'Istar' who deliberately debauches a theological student. Other characters included a young prostitute and Moana Milton, identified as a 'maternal nymphomaniac' . . ." The ruse of issuing the book on subscription as an expensive limited edition worked: every copy sold before publication.

About James Huneker (from Wikipedia): ******JAMES HUNEKER, b. 1857 d. 1921, was one of America's leading literary and music critics, and the author of several novels. Few American writers elicited the adulation that Huneker received from his colleagues in his lifetime and immediately after his death. "There was no one like him," art critic Henry McBride wrote of Huneker. "His strength lay in his knowledge of life and his ability to write." Art historian Jerome Mellquist agreed, noting that "Huneker could impart a grace and a quality of spiritual audacity unsurpassed by any critic of his generation." Huneker's friend H. L. Mencken described his dinner table conversation as "a really amazing compound of scandalous anecdotes, shrewd judgments, and devastating witticisms." Numerous memoirs from the period recall him as an unforgettable personality. PAINTED VEILS, published in the last year of his life, was considered a racy novel.****** Thomas Lynch Raymond, Jr. (to whom the book was inscribed and presented), b. 1875 d. 1928, served two nonconsecutive terms as Mayor of Newark, New Jersey from 1915 to 1917 and again from 1925 to 1928.
