William Shakespeare. Antony & Cleopatra by William Shakespeare and edited by M R Ridley. J M Dent & Sons Ltd, London, England. UK, 1939.

Price: US$13.93 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: ## Antony & Cleopatra by William Shakespeare and edited by MM R Ridley 1939## ## THIS BOOK: Classified NEAR FINE: This is the 1939 edition, first published in 1935. The cover is red linen with a gold Crown, sword and axe motif in the centre. There are signs of use, but the book is clean and slightly discoloured on the page edges due to paper quality. A small book, easy for the pocket.## ## Antony and Cleopatra: A 1939 Edition by J.M. Dent, Edited by M.R. Ridley, is a remarkable literary scholarship. This edition is part of the esteemed Arden Shakespeare series.## ## Editor's Approach: Ridley's approach to editing this classic play is noteworthy. He reprinted a significant portion of R.H. Case's work without making substantial alterations, treating it as a 'period piece of furniture'¹. His additions to the text are in what might be called a 'repro' style. ## ## Ridley eschews the close-packed detail of other editors in the series, offering a personal and sophisticated commentary instead. His work for the New Temple Shakespeare has given him considerable experience. Although his introduction and notes for "Antony and Cleopatra" are not the compendium envisaged by the General Editor, they provide a level-headed and readable commentary by a scholar who has appreciated Shakespeare's work. ## ## Conclusion: The 1939 edition of "Antony and Cleopatra", edited by M.R. Ridley, is an important contribution to Shakespearean scholarship. It offers readers a unique perspective on this classic play, enriched by Ridley's extensive experience and thoughtful commentary. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. Mr. Rackham's Illustrations for this play were made in watercolor. They are full of fancy and fantasy, and they are, as in each of Mr. Rackham's pictures, engaging to the eye, pretty to look upon." "This is one of the 37 volumes of the set of the works of Shakespeare, each illustrated by a different artist, produced for members of the Limited Editions Club in 1939-40." Rogers was known for his "classical" style of design, rejecting modernism, never using asymmetrical arrangements, rarely using sans serif type faces, favoring stolid roman faces such as Caslon and his own Centaur.

SHAKESPEARE, William. THE PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: THE COMEDIES, HISTORIES & TRAGEDIES: 37 volumes. Limited Editions Club 1939-1940, New York, 1939.

Price: US$1875.00 + shipping

Description: Thirty-seven folio (8-3/4" x 13") volumes bound in gold-stamped half natural buckram, top edges gilt, with the paper sides, printed in four colors. Edited by Herbert Farjeon, who created the Nonesuch edition text of Shakespeare, to restore the original typographic style and spelling; typography planned and production supervised by Bruce Rogers. Each of the 37 volumes is illustrated by one of the world's leading book artists including Arthur Rackham, Eric Gill, Robert Gibbings, Jean Charlot, and Frans Masereel. Media include wood engravings and lithographs with some hand coloring. An attempt to "produce a text such as Shakespeare himself might have passed for the printer had he personally read the proofs," and surely one of the most beautiful editions, if not the most beautiful edition, of Shakespeare ever produced. Each volume is copy #705 of 1950 copies issued unsigned. Included are the Commentaries for each play, never folded in this case. The covers reproduce a patterned wall painting uncovered under many layers of wallpaper in a room in an old house in Oxford that belonged to John Davenant where Shakespeare spent nights on his annual journey to Warwickshire. When one looks at the outside of one of these books, one probably sees the very design Shakespeare saw waking after a long night of talking and drinking with Davenant who was a vintner. Slight browning to the gutters of some volumes, contents bright and fresh. Spines foxed to varying degrees, some very much so. Overall an attractive set in at least Very Good condition

William Shakespeare. The Poems of William Shakespeare, a publisher's presentation copy, one of fewer than 100 copies finely bound by the publisher, this copy housed in the publisher's slipcase and accompanied by the publisher's December 1939 presentation slip. The Overbrook Press, Stamford, Connecticut, 1939.

Price: US$2400.00 + shipping

Description: This massive, strikingly beautiful publication of The Poems of William Shakespeare was produced in a limited edition of 150 copies by the Overbrook press in 1939. This is a finely-bound publisher’s presentation copy, accompanied by the publisher’s 1939 presentation slip, and still housed in original, publisher-supplied slipcase. This publisher’s half-Morocco binding features brown spine and corner tips, the spine printed in gilt with blind rules at the spine ends and at the transitions to the marbled paper-covered boards. The contents are printed on sumptuously thick, grey, Cromwell handmade paper bound with untrimmed edges The text, in red and black, is handset in letter press with Lucretia type and decorative initials designed by Bruce Rogers. Overbrook issued bound copies in a slipcase of brown cloth with tan paper-covered sides. The physical presence is impressive, weighing more than seven pounds and measuring 18.5 x 12 x 1.75 inches. The contents contain Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece, The Sonnets, A Lover’s Complaint, The Passionate Pilgrim, and The Phoenix and Turtle. The text is that of the Complete Works "edited by George Lyman Kittredge, Gurney Professor of Literature in Harvard University." While the limitation was specified as 150 copies, this understates the scarcity; reportedly, more than a third of the edition was never bound. Copies are elusive thus, bound, presented with the publisher’s compliments slip, and housed in the original slipcase.Condition is near fine. The binding is square, tight, and clean. We note only mild toning and a little freckling to the spine and light wear to the corners, which appears solely the result of contact with the slipcase. The vast expanse of the marbled paper-covered boards is notably clean and fresh. The contents are immaculate, with no toning, spotting, or soiling. The printed publisher’s presentation card, typed in four lines, reads "With cordial Season’s Greetings | FRANK ALTSCHUL | Stamford, Connecticut | December 1939". The publisher’s slipcase approaches near fine, showing only mild shelf scuffing to extremities and light soiling to the paper-covered sides. Please anticipate shipping charges commensurate with the size of this book and careful packing to protect it in transit.William Shakespeare (1564-1616) – whom the late literary critic and scholar Harold Bloom claimed invented the human, forever changing our consciousness with characters such as Hamlet and Falstaff – left a mammoth legacy whose continuing influence is difficult to overstate. His stature so dominates English letters that it verges on biblical proportion. To the point, Shakespeare is often assumed to have been born on 23 April, St. George’s Day, so that England’s national poet and her patron saint share the same day of celebration, akin to how Christ’s birthday is asserted onto the winter solstice. Shakespeare’s plays are the most conspicuous aspect of his literary legacy, but, as Robert Graves states in his Preface, "Shakespeare built up a double reputation in literature; as a classic English playwright and as author of the Sonnets, his profound meditations on love. In the plays we are frequently aware of Shakespeare the poet; in the Sonnets we recognize his role as dramatist. The author of the Sonnets became incomparably greater than his contemporaries precisely because he needed to see himself and his beloved in dramatic and human terms." A successful financier, Frank Altschul (1887-1981) had a keen interest in books, public affairs, and philanthropy. Altschul improbably established Overbrook Press in an abandoned pigpen on his 450-acre Connecticut estate. From such humble origins, Overbrook Press specialized in exquisitely printed and illustrated limited edition books for collectors, with a reputation among bibliophiles for fine typography and careful bookmaking.
