Condition: Very Good

Description: Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (9 May 1860 - 19 June 1937) was a Scottish novelist and playwright, best remembered as the creator of Peter Pan. He was born and educated in Scotland and then moved to London, where he wrote a number of successful novels and plays. There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys, who inspired him to write about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (first included in Barrie's 1902 adult novel The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a 1904 "fairy play" about an ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. This edition published in the early nineteen hundreds in full blue calf with bright gilt titling and decoration to the spine and JMB device to the upper board. There are blind borders to the sides and gilt top page edges. From the creator of Peter Pan, My Lady Nicotine is one of his earlier works. Focusing on his days as a smoker, J.M. Barrie takes us through his life as a smoker to his last pipe as he begins his non-smoking days. Barrie's humorous essays about his companions, habits and quitting are sure to delight readers. The first is Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, which was issued in 1906, complete with fifty full colour plates by Arthur Rackham. This is the story of Peter Pan having adventures with the Fairies, Pixies and Animals of the Famous London Park. The second book issued was Peter and Wendy, published in 1911, with a decorative title page and twelve full page mono plates by F. D. Bedford. This is the Best known of the three, with Peter and Wendy and the other Darling children visiting Never Never Land and meeting Captain Hook and the Crocodile. The last is Peter Pan; or the Boy who would not grow up, published in 1928. This is actually the first time Barrie's famous Peter Pan play, performed on stage since 1904, was published in book form.

Description: 21 vols, Sml. 8vo (180 x 130 mm (7 1/4 x 5 in); small, marginal corner stain affecting poart of one vol. (When a Man's Single), otherwise clean and bright; publisher's full blue calf, spines gilt, author's gilt monogram to front covers, top edge gilt, near-fine. From the author's inscription to the verso of the second upper free endpaper of; The Little Minster, this set would appear to be a gift to a nurse caring for him at the time: 'Some Scotch books to my kind nurse Sister Seaton, at 15 Park Lane, from her grateful patient, J. M. Barrie, Feb 1933'. Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, (1860 - 1937), Scottish dramatist and novelist who is best known as the creator of Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up. Barrie's first successful book, Auld Licht Idylls (1888), contained sketches of life in Kirriemuir (his birthplace) and the stories in A Window in Thurms (1889) continued to explore that setting. The Little Minister (1891), a highly sentimental novel in the same style, was a best seller and, after its dramatisation in 1897, Barrie wrote mostly for the theatre. His autobiographical novels When a Man's Single (1888) and Sentimental Tommy (1896) both feature a little boy in Kirriemuir ('Thrums') who weaves a cloak of romantic fiction between himself and reality and becomes a successful writer. Most of those early works are marked by quaint Scottish dialect, whimsical humour, comic clowning, pathos and sentimentality. Most of Barrie's stage triumphs have been dismissed by critics as marred by ephemeral whimsicalities but at least six of his plays—Quality Street (1901), The Admirable Crichton (1902), What Every Woman Knows (1908), The Twelve-Pound Look (1910), The Will (1913) and Dear Brutus (1917), are of indisputably high quality.

An important presentation/association copy of this classic children's fantasy play with a superb inscription. "Jane" was the lifelong nickname given to Sylvia Jocelyn Llewellyn Davies, the daughter of Jack Lewellyn Davies, one of the principal inspirations for Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. Jane was named after her grandmother, the daughter of French-born cartoonist and writer George du Maurier, who was a close companion of Barries whose death would lead to the author becoming the guardian of her sons. RBH locates only 5 inscribed copies of this title, with only one that might be as close a personal association - that being a copy of the Rackham illustrated limited edition of “Peter Pan” inscribed by Rackham to Barrie and additionally inscribed by Barrie to his sister Maggie. That copy sold in 2011 for $35,000. Provenance: By descent through the family of Jack Llewellyn Davies and thence to the present owner.
