Description: 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 32 pages; 1st edition, with impression state unknown. Lacking the original Lovat Fraser illustrated wraps. Text block soundly bound and generally clean. First leaf is the title page which has just mild spotting and toning. A small vintage Strawbridge & Clothier price sticker to the top edge of the final page. Light rubbing to edges. The only indication of priority in printing of the 1st and 2nd impressions was printed by the publisher along the top edge of the wraps. So this must be presumed a 2nd impression. First published work by Graves. A good candidate for a recasing in cloth. Text block nearly VG but lacking wrap so G only thus

Title with a MS bookplate, 'Ex Libris A.B' on the title page. Title & last two leaves with some foxing, the title being the worst, otherwise occasional light spotting, more so to the fore-edges. Some darkening to the wrappers and creased on the yap edges, small 1.5cm split to lower front hinge, otherwise Vg. Second Impression stamped to upper cover corner. Internally NO inscriptions, adverts to endpages, light spotting to title page, [5], 6-32 pp. Cover designed by C Lovat Fraser. An excellent copy of a rare book, untouched. Wonderful! 26 poems, Graves's first foray into publishing. First published by the Poetry Bookshop, London, in 1913. (Higginson A1. Reilly 146. Contemp Poets 438). Graves, Robert von Ranke, poet and novelist, whose wartime experiences—during the battle of the Somme in 1916 he was so badly wounded in the lung that he was left for dead and was later able to read his own obituary in The Times—had a major impact upon his poetry, especially when combined with the thoroughgoing criticism which he had received from Edward Marsh, the editor of successive volumes of Georgian Poetry. In 1916 an impressive first volume of Graves's poems appeared, entitled Over the Brazier. See ODNB.
