Description: Very handsomely bound in finely wovely gleaming black cloth spine stamped brightly in gold. And cinnamon cloth-covered boards stamped with a gilded bird. Very clean and tight throughout; with a discrete address sticker at the top of the front endpaper. Tiny tear at the edge of the left spine edge. Overall, a very attractive and collectible copy of this splendid novel which was made into a fine movie directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. Blixen is best known for Out of Africa, an account of her life while living in Kenya, and for one of her stories, Babette's Feast, both of which have been adapted into Academy Award-winning motion pictures. She is also noted for her Seven Gothic Tales, particularly in Denmark. Blixen was considered several times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. (Wikipedia) Out of Africa is a memoir by the Danish author Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke. The book, first published in 1937, recounts events of the seventeen years when Blixen made her home in Kenya, then called British East Africa. The book is a lyrical meditation on Blixen’s life on her coffee plantation, as well as a tribute to some of the people who touched her life there. It provides a vivid snapshot of African colonial life in the last decades of the British Empire. Blixen wrote the book in English and then rewrote it in Danish. The book has sometimes been published under the author's pen name, Isak Dinesen. (Wikipedia) First Edition with "First Edition" stated on the copyright page.

Condition: Very Good

Description: An unusual copy of the first Random House edition in about very good condition. This copy once belonging to the Shankel family of Capetown, South Africa and Seattle, Washington. There is a newspaper article glued to the front endpaper describing a talk at the University Club by the Shankel’s regarding there travels in Africa. Above the article is the signature in a single hand of Mr. and Mrs. Shankel. They or someone else have written below the signature “lived in Africa-17 years” .There are tape marks, glue stains, and an old bookplate belonging to another family on the cover verso and front endpaper. The jacket has the price blacked out, some wear to the edges, and a substantial chip to the back panel. Oddly, there is an envelope taped to the verso of the back cover. The envelope is now empty, but certainly once contained a letter or some other document related to the book or family.

Out of Africa is the memoir of Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke, a Danish author who published many of her works under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen, and is based on the author's experience living in Kenya when it was controlled by the British Empire. It offers a unique glimpse at life in colonial East Africa. Interestingly, while this first American edition credits Isak Dinesen on its dust jacket, the first English edition cites Karen Blixen as the author. In 1985, Out of Africa was adapted into a film of the same name starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep under the direction of Sydney Pollock.

Description: Beautiful first US edition, review copy with publisher's slip, of this evocative memoir of the author's experiences in Kenya. Written after her return to Denmark in 1931, but not published until 1937 following the success of her first book (SEVEN GOTHIC TALES), OUT OF AFRICA tells the story of Dinesen's doomed Kenyan farm, a coffee plantation she managed beginning in 1914. While no discussion of OUT OF AFRICA is complete without examining its function as a colonialist narrative, the book's exquisite English prose (from a Danish author) and decidedly feminist narrative remain noteworthy. A lovely copy of her best-known work, successfully adapted into the Oscar award-winning film starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, rarely found in this condition. 8" x 5.35" Original publisher's quarter black gilt cloth over orange pictorial cloth (showing a large land bird). In original price-clipped dust jacket. Green topstain, fore-edge machine deckle. 389 pages. Publisher's review slip laid in. Only a bit of toning, one tiny closed tear to jacket. Overall, sharp and bright.
