FIRST EDITION AND PRINTING OF HAWTHORNE'S WRITINGS ON ENGLAND, A WORK WHICH INCLUDES SOME OF THE AUTHOR'S BEST NONFICTION WORK . The years which Hawthorne passed in England were outwardly the most successful, in worldly prosperity the most abundant, and in other respects among the happiest of his life; forming in the autumn of his career a sort of counterpoise to the idyllic period spent at the Old Manse. Of these years,--from the spring of 1853 to June of 1860, excepting a part of 1858 and 1859, which interval was chiefly spent in Italy,--"Our Old Home" was the literary outcome. Much of the material composing the sketches in this volume occurs in embryonic form in the "English Note-Books," which were then still veiled from publicity; but various elements and touches of fancy were supplied by the author's mood or memory at the instant of writing. His impressions of England, outlined in the "Note-Books" and scattered at random through many pages, here assume a connected and artistic shape.

Description: First Edition. Hardback. First edition. 8vo. pp. xi, [i], 398. One page of undated publisherÕs advertisements at end. Original publisherÕs brown fine ribbed cloth with blind stamped design to covers spine lettered gilt. ÔFrom the author' written on first blank possibly in Hawthorne's hand but it is more likely to be written by the publishers or his agent and sent over to Hawthorne's English friend Henry Arthur Bright at Hawthorne's request, Hawthorne had let England in 1960 and never returned. From the library of his son Allan Heywood Bright (1862 - 1941) Liberal politician, distinguished book collector and author of books on mediaeval English with his calling card tipped in at the half title. HawthorneÕs last book published during his lifetime. Printed dedication and letter to Franklin Pierce. ÔConsular ExperiencesÕ published for the first time together with eleven other pieces previously published in periodicals and gift books.Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) first encountered Henry Arthur Bright (1830-1884) an English merchant based at Knotty Ash, Liverpool, antiquarian, renowned book collector, poet, writer on gardening, critic and publisher in 1852, when Bright, on a tour of America, met him in Concord by means of a letter of introduction made by Longfellow. So began a close friendship which was further enabled by Hawthorne's move to England in the following year, having been appointed US consul in Liverpool by President Franklin Pierce. Bright came from a notable and wealthy Liverpool family and was a partner in his father's shipping firm of Gibbs, Bright & Co. He was a literary enthusiast who wrote reviews for the Athenaeum and other periodicals on a regular basis, including of books associated and by Hawthorne. He was also a writer, his 'A Year in a Lancashire Garden', was a much loved nineteenth-century garden autobiography. For Bright, the friendship provided intellectual stimulus, the two were known to spar, Hawthorne's wife said, 'Bright is one of Mr Hawthorne's enthusiastic lovers and they fight in love and honor all the time.' Bright meanwhile was able to provide Hawthorne with an entry into Liverpool society and introduced him to British countryside and towns; the two went on various expeditions together including a tour of North Wales. Hawthorne presented Bright with the manuscript of 'The Marble Faun' and said of him, he 'was the illumination of my dusky little apartment, as often as he made his appearance there!' Bright said of Hawthorne, 'It is one of the best things in my life to have made a friend of you.' Hawthorne returned for the last time to the United States in 1860 already suffering from ill health, he was to die four years later Allan Heywood Bright (1862-1941), a Liberal politician, was the son of Henry Arthur Bright and his wife Mary Elizabeth nee Thompson of nearby Thingwall Hall. Very good indeed.
