Description: Brown pebbled boards with black 3/4 leather spine wrap and corners. Five raised spine bands, gilt embossed title on front covers, gilt titling to spines. Marbled endpapers and edges. Reprint of 1877 edition. Vol. 1 - Discoveries, Colonies & Settlements - xviii, 596 ppgs., Vol. 2 - The War for Independence & The Nation - xii, 597 - 1198, Vol. 3 - The Nation (cont'd) & The Civil War; or The Social Revolution - xiv, 1199 - 1866. Illustrated with over 500 b/w illustrations (many are tissue-guarded full page engravings) and twelve fine engravings on steel. Light scuffing and abrading present, mostly to spine ends and edges. Small tear to spine top on Vol.1. Gilt still bright on spines and covers. Some spotty foxing present, primarily to first few pages of each volume and occasionally to some illustrations. Front hinge cracked between 2nd & 3rd ffep on Vol.1. Bindings overall are still remarkably tight. No previous owner markings. All in all, still a very handsome set.
