Rubbing to extremities, corners lightly bumped, wear with some loss to leather of spine head (approx ½"); interior unmarked, binding slightly open at half title, otherwise sound. Brief gift note on a preliminary blank page. All other pages are creamy white, clean and unmarked. Written and illustrated by Howard Pyle, with tissue-guarded frontispiece "In the Belfry." According to Morse & Brinckle, the book has 26 [not 24] full-page b/w plates, 36 decorations, 16 initials, for a total of 78 illustrations by Howard Pyle -- none previously published. The publisher's catalogue at the end reprints 5 other Pyle illustrations.
