One quarter brown leather over green cloth, gilt titles and decorative blindstamping to spine, three color pictorial front, gilt front titles; brown endpapers, black & white tissue guarded frontispiece, black & white illustrations. Rubbing to extremities, corners lightly bumped, wear with some loss to leather of spine head (approx ½"); interior unmarked, binding slightly open at half title, otherwise sound. A very good minus to very good copy.

Much of the original leather spine remains (for reuse) although "Otto" has perished from the top as has a piece at the heel. SEE PHOTOS. Internal condition is FINE. NO foxing. Brief gift note on a preliminary blank page. All other pages are creamy white, clean and unmarked. Written and illustrated by Howard Pyle, with tissue-guarded frontispiece "In the Belfry." According to Morse & Brinckle, the book has 26 [not 24] full-page b/w plates, 36 decorations, 16 initials, for a total of 78 illustrations by Howard Pyle -- none previously published. The publisher's catalogue at the end reprints 5 other Pyle illustrations. This is the publisher's original half leather and green cloth binding, as advertised ("royal 8vo, half leather, $2.00") on this book's final page of ads. SEE PHOTOS. The front cover is elaborately and beautifully decorated in bright gold, black, red and gray. There is NONE of the usual cover fading. Brown coated end papers. Inner hinges are PERFECT. Boards and spine are straight. Binding is tight. Antiquated gift inscription on front end sheet to Orville B. Babcock. On the title page is the embossment of another owner of the book, Joseph A. Sadony. Pages are lightly toned with light sparse thumbing but in very good condition. Illustrated in b&w with headpieces, tailpieces, and frontispiece plus 24 plates.
