Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935) was a British archaeologist, army officer, diplomat, and writer, renowned for his role in the Arab Revolt (1916-18) and the Sinai and Palestine Campaign (1915-18) against the Ottoman Empire in the First World War. Description: This is an exceptionally clean first edition, second printing. This second printing was published in May 1939, the same month as the first printing, and is identical with the sole exception of the print history on the copyright page.Condition is near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The jacket is clean, bright, and complete apart from a neatly price-clipped lower front flap. Trivial wear is confined to hinges and extremities. The jacket is fitted with a clear, removable, archival cover. The volume beneath it suits its jacket. The khaki cloth binding is tight and clean with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and no appreciable wear apart from a little wrinkling to the spine heel. The contents are bright with a crisp, unread feel. The brown-stained top edges retain deep, unfaded color. The sole detraction that prevents our grading the volume as fine is spotting, primarily confined to the prelims and to the fore and bottom edges. A small bookplate with a printed name is affixed to the upper front free endpaper recto and a tiny sticker of "Anthony Hoderns", which traded under that name from 1823-1966 in Sydney, Australia, evolving from a drapery shop into a major department store.Published four years after Lawrences death, Oriental Assembly was arranged by his brother and literary executor, A. W. Lawrence. The book purports to contain "all the hitherto uncollected writings by Lawrence about the East. First, a Diary kept during a journey which Lawrence made on foot through Northern Syria in the summer of 1911, chiefly for the purpose of studying and photographing Crusaders castles and of collecting antiquities for the Museum at Oxford In addition the book contains the full text of the suppressed Introductory Chapter to Seven Pillars of Wisdom." A FINE AND VERY HANDSOME COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN DUSTJACKET, NOW QUITE SCARCE. A volume of Lawrence's previously uncollected writings, edited by his youngest brother and literary executor. It includes the suppressed chapter of Seven Pillars, a note on Kennington's Arab portraits and other important essays. The first part of the book contains uncollected writings b y Lawrence about the east including a diary kept during a journey made on foot as he made his way through Northern Syria in the summer of 1911, as he studied and photographed crusader castles. The second part of the book contains over 100 photographs taken by Lawrence during the revolt in the desert. There is very good material here on Lawrence's pre-war tour of Ottoman Syria, during which he traveled 1000 miles on foot undertaking archaeological field research of ancient military architecture, At the end of his forward, A. W. Lawrence states, "This volume comprises practically all the authors miscellaneous writings, with the exception of Crusader Castles. I hope that essay, already printed as a personal document in a limited edition, will eventually be reissued as a work of scholarship, with annotations and additional matter by several authorities. Description: The very scarce Uncorrected Proofs, described by O'Brien as the First English Edition (A220). Octavo. Twenty-one gatherings of folded sheets, comprising 292 pages of text and illustrations/plates, including several blank pages for lists of illustrations to be added later; loose in a contemporary cloth-covered portfolio. With contents and collation as stated in O'Brien. Some edges rough-trimmed. The XIX diary plates and 111 war photographs present as called for, as well as a portrait of Lawrence by R. G. Goslett, standing in the desert in full arab dress, tents behind, intended as the frontispiece and titled as such but not used in the published edition which featured instead an image of Lawrence's camels. Minor wear and spotting to edges of some textual leaves but near fine overall. 'Oriental Assembly' contains hitherto unpublished writings by Lawrence about the Middle East, including a diary kept on his journey through Northern Syria in 1911 collecting antiquities for the Ashmolean Museum, and the suppressed introductory chapter to 'The Seven Pillars of Wisdom'. With the ownership initials on the first leaf of Walter John Armytage (1913-1980), and his pencil amendment to the contents page inserting the definite article before 'War Photographs', a correction observed in the published book suggesting possible involvement with the publishers. A scion of one of Ireland's noble families (their seat was Halston House in Moyvore, County Westmeath), Armytage was a passionate book collector with an extensive library. Covers slightly bowed, foxing to fore-edge and sporadically to contents, small mark on the spine, otherwise a lovely bright copy. The dust jacket has a few minor spots and abrasions but is overall a superb example. With a photographic frontispiece of camels, among more than a hundred photographs taken by Lawrence as mentioned. Same provenance as the Uncorrected Proofs, with an interesting pencil note on the front blank by Armytage, preceded by his initials and the year 1939 : "These photogtaphs were all identified by me at the Imperial War Museum & the proofs compared with the originals and the negatives. I searched for Seal-Hunting in Mesopotamia (see p.3) through long runs of various periodicals in the British Museum without success", and signed Walter Armytage. Loosely inserted is a copy of the publisher's prospectus for Lawrence's 'Secret Despatches from Arabia' (Golden Cockerel Press, 1939): single leaf folded, white laid paper, lower edge deckled.
