The UK edition retailed at twelve shillings and sixpence (12/6) and the US edition at $2.95. A crucial witness is unaware of his role as such until two years after a man is found guilty of a murder. Key witness Arthur Calgary discovers that he was with the accused at the time of the murder and tasks himself with uncovering the truth. The book was criticized at the time of its publication for being too psychological, however, more recent reviews cite it as one of Christie's best works of the 1950s. Christie herself sometimes referred to Ordeal by Innocence as her favorite work.

Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan (1890-1976) was an English writer known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections. She also wrote the world's longest-running play, the murder mystery The Mousetrap, which has been performed in the West End of London since 1952. A writer during the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction," Christie has been called the "Queen of Crime" or "Queen of Mystery." She also wrote six novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. In 1971, she was made a Dame (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to literature. Ordeal by Innocence received mixed reviews upon publication, as reviewers were not generally comfortable with the psychological aspects of her story. The plot had her "customary ingenuity" but lacked "blitheness" and was "much too like an attempt at psychological fiction." However, it has been noted Christie sometimes called it her own favorite work. A first edition with original dust jacket! Gift quality.

Calgary provides an alibi for Jacko, claiming to have given him a ride on the night of the murder. However, this revelation comes as a shock to the Argyle family, as it not only suggests Jacko's innocence but also implies that someone else in the family is the real murderer. As the family members come to terms with this new information, old wounds are reopened, and buried secrets resurface. The novel delves into the complex dynamics of the Argyle family, exploring their relationships, motives, and the events leading up to Rachel's death. As Dr. Calgary and the family members investigate, they uncover hidden truths, and the search for the real killer takes unexpected turns. "Ordeal by Innocence" is known for its intricate plotting, psychological depth, and surprising twists that keep readers guessing until the very end. Agatha Christie weaves a tale of suspense and intrigue, showcasing her mastery of the mystery genre.
