Gabriel Garcia Marquez | Gregory Rabassa (Translated from the Spanish by). One Hundred Years of Solitude. Pirated copy, Taiwan, 1970.

Price: US$625.00 + shipping

Description: Pirated Edition (Stated First Edition). 8vo. 422pp. Cloth boards. Soon after its original publication pirated editions of the lauded novel were proliferated throughout Taiwan and China, due both to censor and lack of legal authorization. After being told of the widespread piracy of his works during a visit to China in 1990, Marquez is purported to have angrily stated, 'not even one hundred and fifty years after my death will my books be authorized in China.' Even still, the first legal and authorized Chinese edition was published in 2011, after much publisher bidding, several years before his death in 2014. This particular copy is completely in English, inferring an early issue, and the text itself printed from the First U.S. Edition of Harper & Row. The half-title and title pages are identical save for the removal of all publisher mention and, curiously, the acute accents over the words Garcia and Marquez. The copyright page, also with all publisher mention removed, bears the First Edition statement in identical typeface and orientation, but now off-middle set on the page and above a printing statement in Taiwanese. Of the pertinent information noted in Taiwanese: sold by the Royal Family Book Co., printed by the Guangda Printing Co., and an additional statement of First Edition. The dust jacket, crudely reprinted, retains the original price of $7.95, but lacks the exclamation mark after the first paragraph, inferring use of the second issue. VERY GOOD in Very Good dust jacket protected in a removable mylar cover. The book itself with just a hint of shelf rubbing along the edges, the pages up to the first chapter are slightly waved due to the quality of paper stock, a small book exchange label on the back endpaper, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards remain bright and distinct. The dust jacket shows slight shelf rubbing along the edges with several very small chips, a very short closed tear at the back panel, otherwise remains colorful and distinct. As pictured.

García Márquez, Gabriel. One Hundred Years of Solitude. New York: Harper & Row, 1970.

Price: US$650.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Translated from the original Spanish by Gregory Rabassa. First American edition, first printing in the second issue dust jacket with "." at the end of the first paragraph on the front flap. Publisher's dark green cloth, gilt lettering, and olive endpapers; in the colorful pictorial dust jacket designed by Guy Fleming. Near fine book, with light rubbing to spine ends and bottom corners, light spotting to text block edges, and light offsetting to rear endpapers; very good unclipped dust jacket, with light wear to spine ends, a few small nicks and creases to edges, a small closed tear to top edge of rear panel, "Doubleday" sticker to rear panel, and lightly nicked corners. Overall, an attractive copy. Widely considered the author's masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude is the English translation of Cien años de soledad, first published in Buenos Aires in 1967 by Editorial Sudamericana. The Pulitzer Prize winning novel tells the story of five generations of the Buendía family, beginning with patriarch José Arcadio Buendía and his wife Ursula Iguarán. Through the family history, García Márquez relates the history of the fictional Macondo people, founded by the Buendías. Despite their importance to Macondo, García Márquez makes clear that the Buendías interpret their land like they interpret themselves - in their own unique and esoteric way. Regardless, the Macondo represent the author's home country, Colombia, and the Buendías, his countrymen. As the dust jacket explains, "In the noble, ridiculous, beautiful, and tawdry story of the Buendía family one sees all mankind, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo one sees all of Latin America." An important example of the magical realism style and the literary Latin American Boom of the 1960s and 1970s, One Hundred Years of Solitude has been translated into over forty languages.

"The novel tells the story of the rise and fall, birth and death, of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendia family, recounting seven generations, from its youthful patriarch of the late 18th century to its last child of the early 20th. At the end of the 1970s this book was voted by the editors of The New York Times Book Review to be not only the best book published in the last ten years, but the one most likely to still be read and still be important one hundred years hence. Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Description: First American edition of the author's magnum opus. Octavo, original green cloth. Near fine in a very good first issue dust jacket with the exclamation point at the end of the first paragraph on the front flap of the jacket. Jacket design by Guy Fleming. "One Hundred Years of Solitude chronicles the life of Macondo, a fictional town based in part of Garcia Marquez's hometown of Aracataca, Columbia, and seven generations of the founding family, the Buendias. He creates a complex world with characters and events that display the full range of human experience. For the reader, the pleasure of the novel derives from its fast-paced narrative, humor, vivid characters, and fantasy elements. In this 'magic realism', the author combines imaginative flights of fancy with social realism to give us images of levitating priests, flying carpets, a four-year-long rainstorm, and a young woman ascending to heaven while folding sheets" (NYPL Books of the Century 31).

Description: In a second state jacket without the exclamation point ending the first paragraph on the front flap. A Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. Top-edge of the text block a bit dusty. Jacket with one small tear closed with tape on the verso, otherwise a very bright, fresh jacket. One Hundred Years of Solitude is considered Marquez' greatest work, and is the book that made his international reputation. First published in 1967 - and in English in 1970 -- the wide spanning story of the Buendia family would achieve incredible popularity and, in fact, be responsible for lifting the future Nobel Prize winner out of poverty as it would go on to sell more than 30,000,000 copies. Considered the ultimate expression of his style of magical realism, One Hundred Years of Solitude has won awards in numerous countries and was listed on Le Monde's list of the 100 Books of the Century. "He has written a novel so filled with humor, rich detail and startling distortion that it brings to mind the best of Faulkner and Gunter Grass. It is a South American Genesis, an earthy piece of enchantment, more, as the narrator says of Macondo, ‘an intricate stew of truth and mirages." (Contemporary New York Times Book Review). Price: US$1750.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: A Fine copy in a Near Fine, bright, unclipped second issue dust jacket (with period) that has a touch of wear to the head of the spine. The story follows 100 years in the life of Macondo, a village founded by José Arcadio Buendía and occupied by descendants all sporting variations on their progenitor's name: his sons, José Arcadio and Aureliano, and grandsons, Aureliano José, Aureliano Segundo, and José Arcadio Segundo. Then there are the women--the two Úrsulas, a handful of Remedios, Fernanda, and Pilar--who struggle to remain grounded even as their menfolk build castles in the air. If it is possible for a novel to be highly comic and deeply tragic at the same time, then One Hundred Years of Solitude does the trick. Civil war rages throughout, hearts break, dreams shatter, and lives are lost, yet the effect is literary pentimento, with sorrow's outlines bleeding through the vibrant colors of García Márquez's magical realism. First Printing of the First U.S. Edition.

Marquez, Gabriel Garcia. One Hundred Years of Solitude [withOUT Exclamation Mark]. Harper and Row, New York, 1970.

Price: US$1800.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Perhaps greatest Latin American novel of the 20th century--the sort of book where most Spanish speaking booklovers can quote the opening line, "Muchos años después, frente al pelotón de fusilamiento, el coronel Aureliano Buendía había de recordar aquella tarde remota en que su padre lo llevó a conocer el hielo." [Translated here by Gregory Rabassa as "Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember than distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice."] In addition to being a great book, this book is a collector's favorite because of the two states of the dust jacket. In some copies, the first sentence of the jacket flap ends with "one of the most important novels ever written in Latin America!" First editions are found with both the exclamation mark and the period. GGM's bibliographer Don Klein has done a lot of work on the question of the exclamation mark and has shown that most if not all of the review copies have the period (See Gabriel García Márquez: Una Bibliografía Descriptiva). What does that mean? It means that there is not one shred of evidence that the "!" copies are "first", as is often stated by those who have one. It's theoretically possible that the first jackets printed had exclamation marks and that error was fixed during the press run, but such changes are rare on modern, high speed presses like those used in the 1970s. It's more likely that the printer printed both variants at the same time, with a final printing plate designed to print multiple copies of the jacket at the same time. If that happened, it means the printer made an error and put the "!" mark in; realized their mistake before printing, but didn't fix the problem everywhere. In any case, collectors have long preferred to have the "!" and since it only appears on some copies of the first printing, it is less common than the corrected period copies. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good dust jacket, withOUT the exclamation mark on the front flap. Small owner's name on the front flyleaf, a bit of wear to the jacket at the top of the spine. I bought this copy because it adds a bit more evidence to the idea that the exclamation mark copies were not the first issued. This copy has a small calling card for José Guillermo Castillo (1938-1999) laid in. Castillo has inscribed the card, "con 'complements' muy afectuosos y personales José." Castillo was a Venezuelan artist who came to New York for the World's Fair in 1964 and stayed a decade. He worked for a time as the literature director of the Center for Inter-American Relations, which supplied funding for translating Latin American literature, including this book. This seems to be one of his "review" copies. The owner's name on the endpaper is K. S. Wilgus, or Karna S. Wilgus, wife of A. Curtis Wilgus, a professor of Latin American Studies at the University of Florida who was appointed by President John F. Kennedy to the board of foreign scholarships in the Office of Inter-American Affairs. One of Castillo's colleagues, with whom he co-founded the New York Graphic Workshop, said of him, "He's the one who started the boom of Latin American literature in the U.S. by promoting García Márquez and Vargas Llosa" (quoted in "Roundtable: New York Graphic Workshop", September/October 2008 issue of Art on Paper, p. 57.).

Gabriel Garcia Marquez. ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE. Harper and Row, New York, 1970.

Price: US$2000.00 + shipping

Description: Fine condition in like dustjacket. This is the first printing of the American edition of Marquez's classic in the second-state dustjacket with a period on the front flap instead of an exclamation point. The state of the jacket does not correlate to the book; books and jackets are printed separately and matched up after they are printed; it is pure chance which jacket goes on which book meaning one of the earliest printed copies of the book could have one of the last jackets printed. In any case, this is the first printing of the American edition of one of the great literary works of the 20th century. The book itself is in fine condition. The jacket bears the $7.95 price and is complete with no chips or tears, but showing very slight shelfwear along its edges. Both the book and the jacket are highly attractive and in overall fine condition. Published in 1967, One Years of Solitude is widely regarded as one of the most important works of 20th century literature and one of the great classics of Spanish literature. It is Marquez's most famous and important novel and set the path which led to his Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982.

García Márquez, Gabriel (novel); Rabassa, Gregory (translation). ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE - REVIEW COPY, WITH TLS FROM PUBLISHER LAID IN. Harper & Row, Publishers, New York, 1970.

Price: US$3500.00 + shipping

Description: First Printing, one of 7,500 copies. Octavo; hunter green cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; variant with headband in olive green and yellow (no established priority); dustjacket; [xiii], 422pp, [1 blank]. Faint foxing to top edge, else Fine. Dustjacket is the so-called second state, with a "." instead of an excalamation mark at the end of the first paragraph on the front flap; price is unclipped, with some minor wear at spine ends, and a few very tiny nicks and tears to extremities; bright, very Near Fine example. A superlative copy of the Nobel Prize winner's masterpiece, and likely the most widely-read Spanish language novel aside from 'Don Quixote.' The present example is a review copy, with the publisher's typed slip laid in; the slip differs from other Harper & Row review slips from the same period, in that in states "IMPORTANT: please note that this is UNCORRECTED PROOF." Also laid into this copy is a brief, one page typed letter from Harper & Row publisher Cass Canfield, Jr. to Dr. Howard B. Gotlieb, former Director of Special Collections at Boston University. The letter is dated 21 October, 1969 - some four months prior to publication of the book - and mentions the enclosure of an advance proof of 'One Hundred Years of Solitude.' It isn't lost on us that the copy these materials came to us in is not an uncorrected proof (of which we presently know of exactly 2 copies). We can only surmise that these proof materials were placed into this copy of the book in-house; Canfield, whose business card is also laid into the book, may have decided that Gotlieb should receive a hardbound copy and not a paperbound proof, and thus would have placed the materials in one of the first hard copies manufactured. Evidence supporting copies in dustjacket with the "." on the front flap being printed prior to publication is discussed at length in Don Klein's 'Gabriel García Márquez: Una Bibliografía Descriptiva, Tomo II.' In it, Klein mentions that two editorial heads at Harper & Row received review copies directly from the printer, both in jackets ending in "." Additionally, the review copy received by translator Gregory Rabassa bore a jacket also ending in a "." and not the exclamation mark (p.635-636). And while we are fully cognisant that review materials often migrate from copy-to-copy within the trade, sufficient evidence is present that the migration here was more than likely the publisher's doing. The only such copy we have handled, the only other known to us being the bibliographer's copy. Klein E2.a.1.
